Each IAS major requires that students complete at least one Interdisciplinary Practice and Reflection (IPR) course that includes an advanced research, creative, or experiential learning project before they graduate.
IPR courses allow students to complete a project that draws on their academic interests and furthers their life ambitions. The IPR project might be a seminar paper in a particular area of study; an academic internship in a relevant field; a service-learning project that builds on the student's academic work; a study abroad opportunity; an art and media project or production; or independent study in collaboration with a faculty member. The IPR requirement asks students to reflect on the value, challenges, and effectiveness of their work in relation to their undergraduate education as a whole.

Study Abroad, Community Service, Internship, and Experiential Learning opportunities
Many of the courses listed above have prerequisites, applications processes, priority registration for specific majors, or other requirements for enrollment. Please check the IAS website and course catalog for details.
Many courses offered in the School of IAS are purposefully designed to satisfy the IPR requirement, but students may also request that IAS Advisors evaluate other learning opportunities to count as IPR. The following opportunities may be evaluated for IPR:
- a 400-level Independent Study course taken for credit outside of IAS (but after admission to an IAS major)
- a 400-level course taken for credit, or an upper division course taken while on Study Abroad, that incorporates one or more of the below high-impact practices:
- Frequent, timely, and constructive feedback through an independent research project in which the student meets with and receives suggestions from the instructor at various points to discuss progress, next steps, and problems encountered, and to review the quality of the student’s contributions up to and through the completion of the project.
- Opportunities to discover relevance of learning through real-world applications such as an internship, practicum, or field placement that requires that students apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their program of study; or mediated discussions that encourage students to reflect on and see the connections between their studies and experiences in a practical setting.
To submit an IPR petition, students should email IAS Advisors with the request, and attach a syllabus from the course being petitioned that lists readings, lectures, course description, learning objectives/goals, learning activities, and/or assessments. All petitions must also be accompanied with a reflection statement that describes how the learning activity connects to the student’s educational goals in IAS. The reflection should demonstrate linkages to IAS learning objectives, available for review online. Please limit the reflection statement to 250 words maximum and include with your course syllabus.
Petitions may take up to three weeks for evaluation. Students may consult with an IAS Advisor for assistance in understanding the IPR requirement and the petition process.
