Cross-Campus Registration Petition

All undergraduate students enrolled at a UW campus may register for courses at another UW campus on a space-available basis, starting on the first day of Registration Period 2 for Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters. In Summer quarter, cross-campus enrollment is allowed in Period 1.

A maximum of 15 credits per academic year (autumn through summer) may be taken on another UW campus.  School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) students wishing to complete additional credits through cross-campus registration during an academic year may submit an IAS Cross-Campus/Final Year Residency petition.

To initiate the petition, print the IAS Cross-Campus/Final Year Residency Petition and submit it to the IAS Office in UW 1, room 390 for departmental recommendation. Even with departmental recommendation, there is no guarantee that the UW Bothell Registrar will approve a petition

In this petition, students must articulate in writing why they are petitioning to take beyond the 15 credits allotted them in an academic year. Specific course numbers and credit amounts should also be included in this petition. The additional credits to petition are calculated by the student, based on what additional courses they want/need to take, and the credit amount of those courses. Students within 60 credits of graduation may also need to petition the Final Year Residency requirement.

Cross-Campus Registration Eligibility

All students with sophomore to post-baccalaureate class standing must complete 15 credits at UW Bothell before they are eligible to register at another UW campus. Students in the Military Science program or a Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) cadet program who must take a related course at UW Seattle in their first quarter at UW Bothell should contact the UW Bothell Office of the Registrar directly. More information on cross-campus registration eligibility.

Final Year Residency Petition

A student must complete 45 of his or her final 60 credits as a matriculated student in residence at the University of Washington campus where the degree is being earned. This means that students pursuing majors through the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (IAS) may complete up to 15 credits of their final 60 credits in coursework outside of UW Bothell.

Students may petition the Final Year Residency Requirement by downloading the online IAS Cross-Campus/Final Year Residency Petition and submitting it to the IAS Office in UW 1, room 390 for departmental recommendation. Even with departmental recommendation, there is no guarantee that the UW Bothell Registrar will approve a petition.

Final Year Residency Petitions are generally completed while the student is within their final 60 credits. For example, a student completing a study abroad trip toward the end of their degree may need to petition the Final Year Residency Policy. Such a petition is typically completed upon the student’s return and in an appointment with an IAS Advisor. The credit amount to petition is often calculated in the appointment with the IAS Advisor.

If an exception is granted, the student still must complete a minimum of 45 credits taken in residence as a UW matriculated student to be awarded a UW degree

IAS Major Requirement Petition

The online IAS Major Requirement Petition may be used to request that alternate coursework satisfy a School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) major requirement. Students must be admitted or declared in an IAS major in order for the online petition to be reviewed, and are encouraged to consult with an Academic Advisor prior to submission. If students are petitioning more than one School or major requirement, the online form must be filled out for each individual requirement.

The online form requires students to write a petition reasoning that explains why the alternate course should satisfy major or School of IAS requirements. Students are strongly encouraged to review the learning objectives for their specific major, and prepare a thoughtful reflection on how the alternate course meets one or more of those goals. Learning objectives may be found on the major webpage.

Students will need to obtain a copy of the syllabus for the alternate course prior to submitting the petition. The IAS Major Requirement Petition is not considered complete until a PDF file of the syllabus is emailed to iasadv@uw.edu. When emailing the syllabus, students should include their name, UW student ID number, and major in the message. Once the IAS Major Requirement Petition form and a copy of the syllabus is received, IAS Academic Advisors will forward materials to the Faculty Coordinator of the student’s major for review.

IAS Minor Requirement Petition

Students wishing to petition a School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) minor requirement should complete the IAS Major Requirement Petition and select the "Minor" requirement option.

Satisfactory Progress Policy (SPP) Agreement

School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) students who are impacted by the Satisfactory Progress Policy (SPP) Hold or Block must address registration actions on a quarterly basis. Learn about UW Satisfactory Progress Policies.

In order for a student to be approved by IAS to continue to take classes at UW Bothell, students must submit a written statement addressing their academic goals and need for an extension. They must also complete an academic plan in an academic advising appointment with an advisor.

To start the process, students should review the IAS Satisfactory Progress Agreement Form and bring a thoughtful written statement to a scheduled advising appointment. The quickest way to schedule an appointment with an IAS Advisor is to book online.
