Professional and Teaching Experience

Deborah Birrane, to date, has had a varied and notable career as a performer, choreographer, teacher, and director. Her work has been passionately embraced by audiences here in the States and abroad. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ms. Birrane began her dance career late, at the age of 20, in a PE class at Penn State University (PSU). Graduating with a BA in Social Work and a minor in Interdisciplinary Dance (89), she ultimately chose the road to dance. Ms. Birrane traveled to Israel with the Penn State Dance Collective; performed in the touring series of Bill T. Jones; Last Supper at Uncle Tom's Cabin; returned to Philadelphia, and danced with Anne-Marie Mulgrew Dancers and, self-produced her own works. Ms. Birrane later received her MFA (95) from the University of Arizona, danced with Tenth Street Danceworks and eventually made her way back to Philadelphia dancing with Mulgrew Dancers, David Appel, and again self-produced her work. Ms. Birrane currently resides in Seattle, where she and her company are based. Continually digging deeper into her art, Ms. Birrane has received certification as a Bill Evans Based Teacher (09) and as a Radiant Health Yoga Teacher (10).

As Artistic Director, Ms. Birrane has created a repertory that is both eclectic and rich. Prior to Seattle, the Company has been presented at The Fringe Festival in Atlanta, Georgia,the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Dance Alliance, and at Penn State University, Abington. Since arriving in Seattle, they have been presented by artsEdge, Juan de Fuca Arts Festival and by Dance Forms Productions to Yugoslavia. Ms. Birrane has also been selected as the dance artist for Seattle's ARTS UP program. Companies that have performed Ms. Birrane's works include Belhaven College Dancers, Kaleidoscope, Fremont Danceworks, Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer, and PSU-Abington Dance Collective.

Ms. Birrane first travelled abroad as a Dancer and Liaison with the PSU-Ogontz Dance Collective to Israel in 1990. In May 2002, she performed in Belgrade and Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. Then in December 2002, Ms. Birrane was invited to St. Petersburg, Russia to the Exercise 2002 International Festival. There Ms. Birrane introduced teachers to the Birrane Creative Dance/Creative Modern Dance curriculum for children.
