Kristin Gustafson organizes two panels for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication

IAS faculty member Kristin Gustafson (photo, left, courtesy of Randy Jessee) co-organized and co-moderated two History Division teaching panels for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication convention in Washington, D.C. As the Division’s Teaching Standards Chair since 2015, Gustafson focuses on pedagogies of diversity, collaboration, community, and justice. She begins her second year of a second two-year term in this leadership position for the Division.

The most recent column, “Using History to Draw Student Attention to the ‘Difficult and Dangerous’ Work of Journalism, Over Time, Around World,” describes her classroom lesson on Ida B. Wells-Barnett’s resistance against attacks meant to shut down her journalistic voice and her resiliency to find new pathways to campaign against lynching. Two IAS students, Hannah Horiatis and Nektaryos Xenos, were published in local community newspapers with work first created in Kristin Gustafson’s Introduction to Journalism autumn course. The Bothell-Kenmore Reporter published Horiatis’ “Rent and home prices are rising in downtown Bothell” and Xenos’ “Downtown Bothell project delayed” in December.
