IAS student and Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS ) major Ila Plank (formerly Samantha Plank) published “Kiss the Girl: Growing Up a Lesbian in the Age of Trump” in the local Seattle paper, The Stranger.  The article reflects on Disney movies and the sexual dissent after the Trump election.

This fall quarter 5 IAS faculty received funding to host speakers and events on campus. Jennifer Atkinson brought Tulalip storyteller and master wood carver Kelly Moses in October who spoke about the relationship between Salish people and the forests in our region; he also shared examples of his artwork. IAS faculty member Katherine Voyles reviewed Garrett Graff’s The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11. Graff’s book is an expansion of his widely-read Politico article “We’re the Only Plane in the Sky,” a moment by moment account of Air Force One on 9/11.  

Raissa DeSmett received a community-based partnership seed grant to support her project Decolonizing Collections: Experiments in Care. DeSmett will work with students preparing the Southeast Asia collections to be accessed by community members as part of a new multi-campus Research Family.
