{"id":20898,"date":"2025-08-30T17:42:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T17:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/?p=20898"},"modified":"2026-08-10T18:10:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T18:10:15","slug":"data-for-public-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/news\/2025\/08\/30\/data-for-public-good","title":{"rendered":"Students turn data into community impact"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Office of Connected Learning fosters high-impact experiences that contribute to innovative and influential teaching, learning and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in the \u201cData for Public Good\u201d program, for example, recently worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letiwa.org\/\">Latino Educational Training Institute<\/a>, a nonprofit looking to expand its services in Everett. Their project was to analyze data that would help guide the organization\u2019s decisions on resource distribution for Latino communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students focused on healthcare access mapping, economic opportunities for local entrepreneurs, and eviction prevention and housing stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sabrina Prestes Oliveira, a Data Visualization major, found the experience eye-opening. \u201cThis wasn\u2019t just a class project,\u201d she said, \u201cIt was real work with real impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work even inspired her to pursue a Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship that allowed her to continue her work with LETI, researching how data can empower underrepresented communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond research, the Data for Public Good students worked closely with faculty mentors who guided them through problem-solving challenges. Professors Jin-Kyu Jung, Baaska Anderson and Sue Kraemer helped students navigate complex datasets and develop meaningful insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And by working with their professors as collaborators, rather than just as instructors, the students gained new perspectives on how to apply their education beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-highlight-paragraph-large has-purple-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-21dba8c57a29a0ad2c6cf76d67ee579c\">Meet Sabrina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data for Public Good is just one part of Sabrina\u2019s UW Bothell experience.
