Human Rights Seminar alumni share their\u00a0stories\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Each year, as part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/undergraduate\/hands-on-learning\/dc-seminar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington,&nbsp;D.C.,&nbsp;Human Rights Seminar<\/a>,&nbsp;a&nbsp;cohort of&nbsp;University of Washington&nbsp;students visits&nbsp;the&nbsp;nation\u2019s&nbsp;capital&nbsp;while completing research into human rights.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, on International Human Rights Day, alumni&nbsp;from the&nbsp;School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences&nbsp;course&nbsp;gathered to reconnect and share their&nbsp;experiences.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior&nbsp;Lecturer&nbsp;Bruce Kochis and&nbsp;Professor&nbsp;Ron&nbsp;Krabill, two&nbsp;faculty&nbsp;members&nbsp;who have been instrumental in&nbsp;developing&nbsp;the class since&nbsp;it&nbsp;began&nbsp;in&nbsp;1991, hosted the reception, which&nbsp;also&nbsp;served as a fundraiser&nbsp;for the seminar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-20578 size-large\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/12\/251210A_129-1024x683.jpg\" style=\"object-position:45% 33%\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" data-object-position=\"45% 33%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/12\/251210A_129-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/12\/251210A_129-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/12\/251210A_129-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/12\/251210A_129-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/give\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/12\/251210A_129.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-black-background-color has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-cover-is-layout-constrained\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-large-font-size\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u00a0takes courage to look directly at the worst things humans do to one another and still commit to addressing them.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Bruce Kochis<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.&nbsp;Kochis spoke about the importance of the class in helping&nbsp;students&nbsp;advance&nbsp;human&nbsp;rights. &#8220;It&nbsp;takes courage to look directly at the worst things humans do to one another and still commit to addressing them,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope their work contributes to our knowledge and helps alleviate suffering.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.\u00a0Krabill\u00a0introduced\u00a0an alumni\u00a0panel\u00a0before leading a discussion\u00a0about\u00a0their experiences in\u00a0the\u00a0class.\u00a0Joining Krabill were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Courtney McCurdy<\/strong>, Global\u00a0Studies\u00a0\u201903,\u00a0participated\u00a0in the 2002 seminar.\u00a0McCurdy\u00a0is\u00a0currently\u00a0director of\u00a0private\u00a0sponsorships at Church World Service in North Carolina and previously worked in\u00a0roles supporting refugees.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ben\u00a0Studley<\/strong>, a triple UW Bothell\u00a0alumnus\u00a0in Community Psychology\u00a0\u201916, Policy\u00a0Studies\u00a0\u201918,\u00a0and\u00a0Business\u00a0Administration\u00a0\u201925.\u00a0He serves as a\u00a0senior\u00a0constituent\u00a0services\u00a0representative for Congresswoman Suzan DelBene and\u00a0is\u00a0a member of the UW Alumni Association Board of Trustees.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hiro Hirano-Holcomb<\/strong>, a current\u00a0UW Bothell\u00a0senior majoring in Law,\u00a0Economics\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Public Policy with a Human Rights minor\u00a0while\u00a0also\u00a0serving as ASUWB\u2019s\u00a0Director of Legislative Affairs\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Saron\u00a0Almaw<\/strong>, a\u00a02022 Business Administration\u00a0alumna\u00a0who is now a\u00a0post-baccalaureate\u00a0student in\u00a0Law, Economics &amp; Public Policy. One of the most memorable moments was visiting the Pentagon. The building still showed visible damage, and the atmosphere was heavy. We\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0allowed to bring our backpacks in, and many of the people we were scheduled to meet were unavailable because they were still responding to the aftermath of the attacks. Another moment that stayed with me was sitting in the Senate during the vote on the Homeland Security Act.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0striking to look back and realize we were\u00a0witnessing\u00a0a pivotal moment in real time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hiro Hirano-Holcomb<\/em>\u00a0<br>Sitting in the House gallery was overwhelming in the best way. Being in the same room where major national decisions happen \u2014\u00a0the symbolism,\u00a0the gravity,\u00a0the contradictions\u00a0\u2014 stuck with me. After being in that space, every meeting\u00a0we\u00a0had felt\u00a0more connected to the broader policymaking\u00a0system.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ben\u00a0Studley<\/em>\u00a0<br>My first trip to\u00a0D.C.\u00a0was the day after I graduated in 2016. I\u00a0had applied\u00a0for a fellowship through the Wounded Warrior Program, which supports veterans transitioning into congressional roles. I had served\u00a016\u00a0years in the Navy and\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know what came next, but advocacy work,\u00a0sparked by Professor Charlie Collins,\u00a0pulled me in. In D.C., I got to see how the \u201ccheese is made\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0how offices communicate, how bipartisan work really does happen and how messy\u00a0but meaningful\u00a0the process can be. Also, I learned that no one in D.C.\u00a0knows how to drive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Saron\u00a0Almaw<\/em>\u00a0<br>One standout moment was touring the Capitol and noticing which stories were emphasized and which were missing. We heard about architecture and\u00a0chandeliers\u00a0but not about the enslaved labor that built the building. That imbalance carried through our meetings.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0often a polished way D.C.\u00a0talks about issues but not always with the deeper historical context. For a long time, I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0see human rights work as a career. It felt like something you did out of passion, not something you were paid for. Eventually, I realized the things that made me feel most alive all lived under the umbrella of human rights. That recognition brought me back to school.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ben\u00a0Studley<\/em>\u00a0<br>For me, it was\u00a0professor\u00a0Charlie Collins. His course shifted the way I understood systems and people. In my current role,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0often the\u00a0first person\u00a0constituents\u00a0talk\u00a0to when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0struggling. No one calls just to say things are fine. They\u00a0call\u00a0because something is broken. Helping them navigate those systems is meaningful. Advocacy became personal, not theoretical.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hiro\u00a0Hirano-Holcomb<\/em>\u00a0<br>My path started in middle school after I came out as LGBTQ+. I was surprised by how little people understood about LGBTQ+ rights, even though big national conversations were happening. Our\u00a0school\u2019s\u00a0GSA\u00a0[Gender and Sexuality Alliance]\u00a0was just\u00a0the adviser and me, but it made me realize that representation and education matter. Later, joining the Legislative Youth Advisory Board showed me how policy can shape human rights. That connection kept pulling me in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Courtney\u00a0McCurdy<\/em>\u00a0<br>Even as a child, I couldn\u2019t understand why someone wouldn\u2019t have food or why certain people were spoken to dismissively. I cared deeply about fairness before I had language for it. They talked openly about taking jobs for experience rather than passion and about navigating setbacks. It helped me understand that human rights work isn\u2019t linear. You keep going because the work matters, not because the path is easy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Courtney McCurdy<\/em>\u00a0<br>Going in 2002 made the experience especially intense. Visiting the Pentagon so soon after 9\/11 and going to the Holocaust Museum had a deep emotional impact. Those moments pushed me to reflect on global crises and human suffering in a way that solidified my commitment to refugee work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hiro Hirano-Holcomb<\/em>\u00a0<br>Our meeting with the Friends Committee on National Legislation stood out. They broke down the mechanics of lobbying and how incremental, sustained advocacy can create meaningful change. It made federal work feel less abstract and showed how hope exists in the slow but steady progress people make.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ben Studley<\/em>\u00a0<br>D.C.\u00a0reinforced for me that \u201cthis too shall pass.\u201d Even in difficult political climates, there are people working behind the scenes to get things done. People like Bruce,\u00a0Camille\u00a0[Walsh]\u00a0and Charlie believed in me, and that kind of mentorship is life changing. Their guidance helped shape my academic and career trajectory.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Courtney McCurdy<\/em>\u00a0<br>I was a nontraditional student, and UW Bothell took a chance on me. That changed my life. AmeriCorps also gave me my first experience working in the Somali community, which shaped the rest of my career. Access and opportunity were essential.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hiro\u00a0Hirano-Holcomb<\/em>\u00a0<br>I had privilege\u00a0\u2014\u00a0financial support from my parents, acceptance of my identity and the stability to volunteer and explore. Not everyone has that. Access shouldn\u2019t depend on privilege, and I want to help expand those opportunities for others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Saron Almaw<\/em>\u00a0<br>My experience was very different. I\u2019m an immigrant and one of seven kids, and I always worked \u2014 often two jobs while in school. I couldn\u2019t have participated in the D.C.\u00a0seminar without funding. Later, a scholarship allowed me to intern at World Relief, which changed my trajectory.
