Program Requirements

Elementary Education Option Requirements

To earn the B.A. in Educational Studies: Elementary Education Option, students must complete all university and major requirements listed below.

UW Bothell Requirements

  • Earn 180 university credits
  • 5 credits - Composition (C)
  • 10 credits - Writing Across the Curriculum (W)
  • 5 credits - Quantitative & Symbolic Reasoning (QSR)
  • 3 credits - Diversity (D)
  • 15 credits - Visual, Literary & Performing Arts (VLPA)
  • 15 credits - Individuals & Societies (I&S)
  • 15 credits - Natural World (NW)

Elementary Education Option Requirements


Teacher Certification Requirements

To be recommended for elementary teacher certification in Washington state, students must also complete these requirements:

  • Successfully complete student teaching internship
  • Pass the NES I and II Elementary Education exams - Attempted prior to student teaching and must be passed for certification
  • Complete and submit a Professional Growth Plan
  • Pass the edTPA assessment - Submitted in Winter Quarter of Elementary Education Cohort

Students will receive support and guidance on all certification requirements from academic advisors, field placement coordinators, and field instructors.


Elementary Education Course Fees

Some Elementary Education courses carry course fees. These fees cover the cost of honoraria for cooperating (mentor) teachers and a student's initial edTPA submission. Including the cost this assessment as a course fee allows students to use financial aid to cover the cost of edTPA.

Endorsement Area

Students must select an ESOL or SPED endorsement. 

Course Substitutions & Petitions

  • Course Petition Form (must be logged in to UW G Suite account)
  • Course Petitions are sent to Educational Studies faculty for consideration on the 15th of each month. Decisions will be sent to students by the 1st of the following month.
  • Students can petition up to 10 credits of Elementary Education Option coursework.
