CoSEE’s newest partnership takes its interns off the trails of Saint Edward State Park and into the streets and neighborhoods of Kenmore. Working with Nina Rasmussen, Climate Action Plan Program Manager for the City of Kenmore, interns Dan Nguyen and Oliver Souliere spent the summer building on years of prior work to complete the city’s urban tree inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both are recent UW Bothell graduates. Dan finished in spring 2026 with a major in Biology and a minor in Data Analytics; Oliver graduated the same term with a major in Data Visualization and a minor in Computer Science and Software Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their work is built directly on the interns who came before them. Over previous years, Kenmore’s interns had cataloged roughly 15,000 trees across the city, gathering detailed information on each. About 3,000 trees still needed data, the last stretch of a large, multi-year effort. Dan and Oliver set out to close that gap, using GIS equipment to locate each remaining tree in the field and record what was missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This internship is built on getting out and doing the work. Dan and Oliver spent most of their time in the field \u2014 walking Kenmore’s neighborhoods, locating trees, recording data, and coordinating with city staff. It’s the kind of hands-on experience that classroom GIS work can’t replicate, and it came with all the unpredictability of real fieldwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of that unpredictability was technological. GPS accuracy wavered, weak cell service kept tree data from loading, and the devices didn’t always sync the way they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sometimes our iPads and laptops wouldn’t synchronize correctly, GPS accuracy wasn’t reliable, and weak cell service prevented tree data from loading properly,” Dan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working through those problems became part of the training. Dan and Oliver learned to troubleshoot in real time, adapt their process, and keep the project moving, the same problem-solving that any GIS or environmental fieldwork demands. As seen where \u201ctheir roles have required them to manage their time and plan out their work strategically for the greatest efficiency\u201d, Nina expressed. That persistence showed in their progress: by mid-internship they had completed about a quarter of the missing tree data, and both projected, reaching half by the time they finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the remaining work easier to track and hand off, Dan and Oliver divided the city into ten distinct areas, called parcels, so completion could be measured location by location. The system gives the next round of interns a clear place to pick up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cataloging trees is more than counting them. By documenting each tree’s location, species, health and condition, with photographs to match, Dan and Oliver are helping Kenmore build a fuller picture of its urban forest, the kind of data a city can use to understand and care for its environment. Nina explains that \u201cDependent on species, when a tree reaches a certain size, it is deemed \u201cexceptional\u201d and has certain protections. Knowing where these trees are located can therefore be really helpful [for the city]\u201d. Their work feeds a public database, so residents can explore the city’s tree canopy for themselves. For Dan, the GIS work connects to broader environmental research. Alongside the Kenmore project, he works with Dr. Santiago Lopez at Saint Edward State Park, where he supported the installation of environmental sensors throughout the park\u2014 placing each one to collect temperature and light data across different areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The goal is to study microclimates and understand how they affect invasive species like holly and blackberries,” Dan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mapping those microclimates can help predict where invasive species are most likely to take hold, information that guides future restoration work in the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internship gave both interns something classroom GIS work can’t: experience collecting real data in real conditions, and the professional relationships that come from working inside a city government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We’ve gained real-world experience balancing fieldwork with office work, which has helped us understand how GIS projects operate professionally,” Dan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Oliver, the fieldwork sharpened his GIS skills while the office side fostered networking and professional experience \u2014 the kind of connections he hopes to carry into a career in local or state government. Dan, who hopes to combine GIS with restoration ecology, sees the internship as a stepping stone toward what comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
