Leadership scholars deepen their commitment to community by pursuing a challenge or project, often focused on public service in the community or on campus.&nbsp;The scholarships are $5,000 and disbursed in installments of $2,500 each over two quarters. Participants collaborate closely with faculty and researchers on projects at host institutions. The program provides stipends and, in many cases, support for housing and travel. To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Application deadlines<\/strong> vary depending on the specific research site or institution. Most REU programs have application deadlines between January and March for summer programs. Students engage in scholarly research with accomplished scholars and peers, earn full-time academic credit, develop original research project, and present their work at a closing symposium. The program is open to all students, regardless of citizenship status or class standing. The program deepens students\u2019 understanding of current policy issues and trends, explores career pathways in public service, and builds key skills for future roles in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SPA begins with a week in Washington, D.C., where students participate in professional development workshops, connect with government leaders, and visit federal agencies. The program specifically aims to support students for whom economic and family circumstances render such career pathways particularly challenging. Service must be focused on one of the following issues: Academic Engagement &amp; Success, Food Security &amp; Basic Needs, Medical &amp; Mental Health Services, and Environmental Stewardship.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fellow can earn an Education Award of $1,459.26 for 300 hours of service, or $1,824.07 for 450 hours of service (paid and unpaid). Students are nominated by faculty, staff, students, community partners, or can self-nominate for consideration by their institution\u2019s president.
