{"id":22857,"date":"2024-03-06T17:35:34","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T17:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/commencement\/?page_id=22857"},"modified":"2026-02-19T16:23:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T16:23:18","slug":"graduate-student-speaker","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/commencement\/ceremony\/graduate-student-speaker","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Student Speaker"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A graduate student speaker will be selected to address the audience at both 2026 Commencement Ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate students who earned a graduate degree in autumn quarter or have submitted their degree request for winter, spring or summer quarters during the current academic year are eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Must be available to attend both Commencement Ceremonies on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application procedure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligible students who wish to apply should submit the following to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:uwbchlr@uw.edu\">uwbchlr@uw.edu<\/a>&nbsp;by 5 p.m. PT on Wednesday, March 25, 2026:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A proposed written speech that is approximately 300\u2013400 words (no longer than three minutes when spoken).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A personal statement no longer than one page, single spaced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Criteria for selection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A compelling speech will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>speak to all 2026 graduating students from all five schools,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reflect on common educational experiences that appeal to a broad audience,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>share the value and impact of the educational experience at UW Bothell,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>celebrate the accomplishments of the 2026 graduating class, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>seek to inspire the audience by emphasizing a positive and uplifting message.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A compelling personal statement will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>demonstrate academic excellence and leadership;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>share scholarly achievements, awards, involvement in extracurricular or professional activities and\/or civic engagement; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>make a persuasive case as to why the speaker applicant should be selected to address the graduating class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Review committee<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications are reviewed by the Ceremonies &amp; Honors Advisory Committee, appointed by the UW Bothell chancellor. The committee uses an evaluation rubric based on the criteria above when reviewing each applicant\u2019s materials. The committee selects three applicants to audition for the committee by delivering their prepared speech. The committee considers the overall quality of the speech and the applicant\u2019s public speaking skills, and then recommends to the chancellor one graduate student applicant to be invited to speak at the 2026 Commencement ceremonies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A graduate student speaker will be selected to address the audience at both 2026 Commencement Ceremonies.
