Follow-up on a campus incident

I wanted to follow-up on an incident reported to us on Nov. 15 involving several Muslim women students who were allegedly approached by several men who then demanded that the women remove their hijabs. I asked our Campus Safety Director, Cham Kao, to investigate these serious allegations immediately. In the past two weeks, Cham worked to follow up on the allegations. To date, he has not been able to verify the incident. The fears raised by this incident are real, and I remain committed to create a safe campus for all.

What does it mean to be a sanctuary?

There has been much discussion throughout the University of Washington community about the concept of a "sanctuary campus."  Let me be clear about my own commitments and those of UW President Ana Mari Cauce: “The University’s policies and commitments are clear and have not changed. We are fully committed to providing a safe, secure and welcoming environment that protects the privacy and human rights of all members of our community.”

Working toward a safe, welcoming UW Bothell

On Thursday, University of Washington President Ana Marie Cauce sent a letter emphasizing the University’s commitment to providing our faculty, staff and especially our students a safe and welcoming campus environment. That includes UW Bothell. From supportive hugs and encouraging community emails to participation in difficult discussions in safe spaces, we have seen our UW Bothell community come together.

UW Bothell values will not waver

I recently learned that several of our Muslim women students were approached by several men, who then demanded that the women remove their hijabs. This intrusion took place on our campus. Let me be clear. This type of behavior is abhorrent and will not be tolerated at UW Bothell. We will not tolerate this kind of behavior. If you see or experience threatening behavior, we want to know so we may quickly investigate.
