Major math discovery at UW Bothell

There is big news in the world of mathematics, and it is happening here at UW Bothell. A team of mathematicians led by Casey Mann, Jennifer McLoud-Mann and math student David Von Derau has recently discovered a new pentagon that can tile a plane - or cover a flat surface with no gaps and no overlaps. This is only the 15th such pentagon discovered in the past 30 years. The finding is remarkable in many ways, in part because it demonstrates the leading-edge student experience at UW Bothell. Students play a vital role in hands-on research and they get involved early in their academic career. Von Derau (who graduated in June) worked alongside his professors and even wrote a program that helped find the tile. Their work exemplifies the excellence and the student experience at UW Bothell.
