Children’s Garden Naturalist and Rock Star


Students actively support the mission of Seattle Tilth by inspiring the next generation to become stewards of the earth's resources and teaching organic practices to cultivate a healthy urban environment and community. Students foster an interest in organic practices and making connections with the earth's food systems.

Work description:

In this position, a students will lead children in garden based activities, curriculum and projects. You are responsible for the well-being and safety of children.

For this position, a student should possess the following skills: Love of the environment and a desire to build earth stewardship through work and creative activities with children. You must enjoy working with small children and young adults and not be scared of bad weather.

Our job is to help you improve your teaching and gardening skills. This is a wonderful way for you to learn skills in an easygoing, fun, outdoor environment. We have so much fun!!


By leading children in garden based curriculum, kids are exposed to the garden and its food web. Service Learning students will directly facilitate this learning experience, serving children from the community and supporting our organization.

Driving notes:

From I-5, take the 45th Street exit and head west for approximately half a mile to Sunnyside Avenue. Turn right on Sunnyside, travel about a block and a half, then turn left into the Good Shepherd Center. The gardens are located in the southwest corner of the property.

Located at the corner of 50th and Meridian in Wallingford, next to Good Shepard Center.

We are easily accessible by bus from the UW campus.

Skills needed:

To be a successful Garden Naturalist, a student must have:

  • Desire to learn about organic practices
  • Desire to work with preschool and elementary-aged children
  • Willingness to commit to one shift each week, minimum
  • Ability to build positive relationships with and promote self-confidence in children
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work in all types of weather

Orientation notes:

We would like you to begin volunteering as soon as possible. The orientation date is set to accommodate service learners from many schools who have different schedules. You may attend the orientation after you begin working with us. Orientation will be outside so dress for the weather and will last until 6:30pm. Bring a water bottle and snack if you like. Please contact Lisa to begin as soon as your registration is confirmed, and to RSVP for the next orientation.

At the orientation, volunteers will be asked to complete paperwork for a background check. We also ask that volunteers complete an ONLINE APPLICATION, which can be done at the Seattle Tilth website:
