Assistant Game Design Intern - UW Bothell Digital Future Lab

Assistant Game Design Intern

The Digital Future Lab (DFL) is a game studio and media research lab located at UW Bothell. We make both commercial and educational games, and our studio work is comprised of at least 80% student labor, with professional oversight and expectations. We aim to explore the intersections of technology and social justice while creating high-quality games and providing a space for students to gain applicable tech industry experience during their college years.

We are seeking passionate UW Bothell students to join our game design team as assistant design interns. Assistant designers will work directly with the Lead Designer and the entire studio team to design game levels, develop game narrative, create documentation, and fine-tune gameplay experiences for our players. Designers will also iterate on and revise their designs based on critique from the Lead Designer, Creative Director, and other studio leads.

Responsibilities (depending on the project):

  • Attending design work sessions
  • Creating, presenting, and maintaining design documentation
  • Designing game levels, features, and systems, including scoring, controls, and characters, user interface function and flow, level layouts, and gameplay prototypes
  • Testing and balancing gameplay
  • Writing text for user interfaces, story, and narrative popups
  • Working on a variety of projects, depending on studio needs, as directed by studio leads
  • Assisting with event and playtest outreach as a representative of the DFL

No previous experience with game design is necessary, but enthusiasm and willingness to learn on the job is essential. Training in game design principles, use of game design tools, and other skills will be provided. Applicants may be from any degree program. Internships are volunteer or for-credit only at this time.

Women and non-binary, genderqueer, and/or trans individuals are strongly encouraged to apply. The DFL is an all-gender and LGBTQ-inclusive workplace and values people from all backgrounds.
