Grounds maintenance is perhaps the primary and signature component of UW Bothell\u2019s sustainable practices. Whether they are <a href=\"#compost\">composting<\/a> our food waste, <a href=\"#organic-land-care\">organically managing<\/a> our campus landscape, creatively <a href=\"#IPM\">managing unwanted pests<\/a>, restoring our <a href=\"#wetland\">wetland<\/a> or planting <a href=\"#edible-campus\">edible plants<\/a> for harvest, our campus Grounds team are some of the most ardent supporters and practitioners of sustainability at UW Bothell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\n    <div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\">\n        <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"With Nature in Mind: Organic Gardening\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PBfjsMUGuQc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>    <\/div>\n\n    \n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Our sustainable grounds practices are highlighted in this fun video!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the ways that we are working towards sustainability through our grounds and landscaping practices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"compost\">On-site compost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to our triple-bin waste stations that get commercially composted by Recology, we compost food and landscaping waste on-site!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the campus farm site, the grounds team maintains a vermicomposting bin filled with red wriggler worms. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take some red wriggler worms home! Want to start your own vermicomposting bin? Email <a href=\"mailto:uwbsust@uw.edu\">uwbsust@uw.edu<\/a> to take a container of our UW Bothell worms home to get started!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Grounds team also maintains series of yard waste compost stations that are turned and kept moist. This is where the majority of the yard waste from campus operations gets processed, and all of it gets returned to the earth within the campus boundaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"organic-land-care\">Organic Land Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/pestcide-free-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A sign reading &quot;pesticide free zone&quot; in a campus garden\" class=\"wp-image-14593\" style=\"width:512px;height:384px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our campus has been pesticide and synthetic fertilizer free since 2006.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The grounds team practices organic land care throughout all campus grounds operations, including maintenance of the 58 acres restored North Creek wetland.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pesticide free initiatives include a robust integrated pest management policy and practice, and permaculture management. By intentionally building healthy soil and biotic communities we ensure that plant life on campus can thrive without the use of added synthetic fertilizers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UW Bothell achieved <a href=\"https:\/\/salmonsafe.org\/celebrating-earth-day-at-salmon-safe-certified-uwb-cascadia-college\/\">Salmon-Safe Certification<\/a> in 2008, and was the second campus in the nation to do so.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2023 UW Bothell received a Platinum Green Grounds certification from <a href=\"https:\/\/campus.rewild.org\/certification-news\">re:wild your campus<\/a>, a conservation organization dedicated to rewilding the planet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fertilizer application records:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/09\/UWB-Fertilizer-Application-Summary-TOTALS-2019-2023.pdf\">2019 &#8211; 2023 Fertilizer application records summary<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/01\/2024-UW-Bothell-Fertilizer-Use-Records.xlsx\">2024 Fertilizer application records<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"IPM\">Integrated Pest Management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UW Bothell implements a robust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/21-1202-Integrated-Pest-Management-Plan-for-UW-Bothell-Cascadia-College-Buildings-and-Grounds-Updated-with-Appendix.doc.pdf\">integrated pest management (IPM) program<\/a> as a key part of its commitment to a pesticide-free campus and as a condition of maintaining our Salmon-Safe Certification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/UWB-IPM-Policy.pdf\">IPM policy<\/a> for UW Bothell states that students and employees have a right to a healthy learning and working environment and that campus will work to achieve this, in part, by reducing and eliminating the use of pesticides and other hazardous chemicals through the use of Integrated Pest Management practices in grounds and buildings management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Per our IPM policy, pesticides are only used as a last resort for pest problems and use of high-hazard pesticides is completely restricted, with very limited exceptions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Included in our unique IPM policy are practices to ensure invasive species are properly managed by avoiding introduction onto campus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The IPM program requires that all application of pesticides are recorded and tracked, which is included as part of the evidence required for Salmon-Safe Certification. This regionally-renowned ecological restoration project reconstructed the lower part of the North Creek stream channel and 58 acres of pastureland to a sustainable, functioning floodplain ecosystem within an urbanizing watershed. This project began in 1997 with the construction of campus, formerly an active cattle ranch, and was led in partnership with many professors who work and perform research at the campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two full-time staff employees (plus additional seasonal workers in the summer) continually and intentionally maintain the area, including replanting, removing invasives, monitoring and gathering data, and adapting management plans to the needs of the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wetland has created a thriving habitat for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/about\/salmon\">salmon<\/a> and for many other critters and creatures, while also creating natural filtration for storm water run-off before it ultimately reaches the Puget Sound.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/wetland\/\">North Creek Wetland<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"edible-campus\">Edible Campus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/Campus-037.jpg\" alt=\"Wooden sign that says &quot;food forest, please pick&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-14595\" style=\"width:241px;height:160px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Edible food and herbs are incorporated into the landscape throughout UW Bothell. Some places where edibles on-campus can be found include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cascadiaupdates.wordpress.com\/2020\/05\/18\/food-forest-cascadias-cornucopia-history\/\">Cascadia College Food Forest<\/a>, which features diverse fruits and vegetables from all around the world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2023\/06\/Campus-008.jpg\" alt=\"a pear on a tree\" class=\"wp-image-14596\" style=\"width:249px;height:166px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/campus-sustainability\/get-involved\/campus-farm\">Campus Farm<\/a>, a space that holds ten raised beds for both extra curricular and curricular use, which is located between the sports fields and the north parking garage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Apple Orchard, located next to the Chase House on the south end of campus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Herb Walk, located along the roadside and sidewalk along 180<sup>th<\/sup> street on the south end of campus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Truly House garden and fruit trees, located along 11th Ave NE, behind Discovery hall. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/12\/campus-community-enjoys-the-fruits-of-student-work\">student project<\/a> to bring fruit trees to the Truly House.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Grounds team designs and maintains all of these landscapes, and we encourage the campus community to explore, taste and engage with these areas. When foraging, make sure you are absolutely certain you know what you\u2019re eating and that it\u2019s safe.
