Dean, School of Business
As long as there’s been a School of Business at the University of Washington Bothell, Dr. Sandeep Krishnamurthy has been its dean. He’s also a primary reason there is a School of Business.
When Dr. Krishnamurthy was named director of the UW Bothell Business Program in 2009, one of his main goals was to elevate the program to a separate school. In 2012, that happened and, one year later, he was named the founding dean.
It was one of many major accomplishments that Dr. Krishnamurthy has had in his 25 years at UW Bothell. He has become a familiar face, not just on campus, but also within the regional business community. The Dean’s Advisory Board includes some of the top executives from around western Washington, as does the Executives-in-Residence program that allows students to connect with executives to learn more about what they do, the complex world of corporate life and providing mentorships that is invaluable.
His work in establishing the School of Business as a major regional partner has also led to the success of three major industry conferences. The Accounting Business Conference, Connect – Supply Chain Management Conference and the Pacific Northwest MBA Conference has significant business support and participation, and they have become go-to events for business leaders at all levels. He also launched three speaker series – Meet the CEO, Frontiers of Global Business and the Nintex Leadership Breakfast Series – that have become must-go events on the local business calendar. He also hosts an annual gala that brings in over 200 business leaders, supporting student scholarships and key programs within the School of Business.
Dr. Krishnamurthy is also a sought-out speaker himself, giving talks on e-commerce at conferences, workshops and research gatherings around the world. He has been an invited speaker in Portugal, India, Canada and Taiwan, along other places.
His push to establish the Eastside Leadership Center in Bellevue was a major expansion of the School of Business’ reach. The location, in the heart of east King County’s tech corridor, has become the home of the school’s MBA, MS Accounting and BA in Business programs. It also has become a center of executive education in the region, helping local leaders sharpen their skills and learn new ideas.
Dr. Krishnamurthy has also set up major campus partnerships within the UW community. He helped create a PharmD-MBA program with the UW School of Pharmacy, collaborated with the UW Bothell’s School of Nursing to establish an executive leadership focus for the school’s MS in Nursing and working with the UW Bothell School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) to set up a minor in Actuarial Sciences with the school’s mathematics and engineering divisions. He also helped create a campus-level program in analytics, an area growing in many industries. There are also numerous courses that he developed and taught on the undergraduate and graduate levels, especially focused on marketing and e-commerce.
The focus of a lot of these activities are the School of Business’ students, and his impact is strong. The mentorship program, along with the Executives-in-Residence, has given UW Bothell business students vital networking opportunities and real-world insight. He established connections with major regional corporations like Microsoft, T-Mobile and Avanade, among others, and created internship programs for UW Bothell business students. His support of undergraduate leadership programs, international honor societies and clubs, and other student clubs have been a big part of his initiatives that help students at all levels.
Dr. Krishnamurthy is also the face of the school and for many UW Bothell programs. He’s a frequent interviewee for local and national media, and recently was part of a GeekWire project where he, along with a group of high school students, analyzed the GeekWire 200 list of startups in the Pacific Northwest. His past writings are also frequently cited; a recent Google Scholar search showed over 5,000 citations of his work in various publications.
His writings are extensive, and cover a wide range of topics. From the state of business education in the COVID-19 pandemic to brand advertising, e-commerce to marketing research, open-source development to consumer power, and many other subjects. One of his books, E-Commerce Management: Text and Cases, has also been translated into Hindi and Chinese. He has edited and contributed chapters to numerous books on e-commerce, open-source software development, and research ethics.
Among the journals where his work has also appeared are the Journal of Business Research, Consumer Needs and Solutions, Research Policy, Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Advertising Research and International Journal of Non-Profit and Voluntary Sector Marketing. His writings have been published for over 25 years.
He arrived at the relatively new UW Bothell campus in 1996, right after earning his Ph.D. in Marketing at the University of Arizona, and has become a fixture ever since. He started as an assistant professor, gaining tenure and moving up to being an associate professor in 2002 and was named a full professor in 2010. He received his post-graduate diploma with a concentration in Marketing and Finance from XLRI in Jamshedpur, India and his B. Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai.
Few are as identified with UW Bothell as Dr. Sandeep Krishnamurthy. The School of Business is the monument to his enduring impact he has had on campus, and in the Puget Sound business community, over his 25-plus years.
