All applicants for whom English is a non-native language must provide proof of English language proficiency. For options to satisfy English language proficiency please see below (please keep in mind requirements may differ from those in General Admission):

Associate Degree Option (must meet all four requirements):
- Complete an approved academic Associates of Arts (or Associates of Arts and Sciences) Degree from a community college in Washington State (An approved academic associate degree from a Washington community college is defined as the sending institution's direct transfer agreement associate degree (DTA). Qualifying degrees (often titled as an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Arts and Sciences) are those that are recorded on an official community college transcript with a designation of "DTA." The degree must be conferred prior to enrolling at the UW.) AND
- Have earned a minimum of a 2.75 cumulative GPA AND
- Have earned a minimum grade of 3.0 in the equivalent of Composition: Exposition (UW ENGL 131) AND
- Have earned a minimum grade of 3.0 in the equivalent of The Research Paper (UW ENGL 141).
NOTE: We strongly recommend completion of Composition: Exposition (UW ENGL 131) and The Research Paper (UW ENGL 141) at the time of application.
The University of Washington Bothell has partnered with the University of Washington Seattle Campus Intensive English Program (C-IEP). This program is for students who do not meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement(s) for admission, but are otherwise admissible.
A minimum grade of 80 percent is required in each course and students must obtain a recommendation from the Senior Director of the UW Seattle English Language Programs. After successful completion of the UW Seattle Intensive English Program requirements, applicants do not have to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or other standardized test scores as proof of language proficiency to UW Bothell.
Only valid for one year after successful completion of CIEP.
Completion of a minimum of four years of high school English in the United States with grades of 3.0 or higher and a minimum SAT critical reading score of 500 or an ACT English score of 20.
International students who have completed a bachelor’s degree with at least 90 or more quarter credits earned at a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or have received a master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. are not required to meet the English language proficiency requirement.
