When Jason Moon, MBA\u00a0\u201924, enrolled in\u00a0the\u00a0Master of\u00a0Business\u00a0Administration program<\/a> at\u00a0UW Bothell\u2019s School of Business<\/a>, he had what many would consider an ideal career path. He worked for Amazon during the height of the pandemic, managed global accounts at\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0and held a steady trajectory in the corporate world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of\u00a0work, he\u00a0was also raising\u00a0two young sons and had recently been appointed to the Mukilteo City Council<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By every metric of traditional success,\u00a0Moon\u00a0was exactly where he was supposed to be.\u00a0But something\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0sitting right.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was comfortable,\u201d he said. \u201cMaybe too comfortable. I had a good job, good benefits and stability. But I knew there were parts of me I wasn\u2019t using. The MBA helped me realize how much potential I had set aside.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stepping outside the\u00a0lines\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moon grew up in the Puget Sound region, spending his childhood outdoors with his parents and grandparents. Hiking, fishing, foraging and exploring the natural environment were a defining part of his identity. And like many first-generation and Asian American students, he grew up with a familiar formula for success: study hard, find stability and stay the course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat mindset isn\u2019t bad,” he said, \u201cbut it can limit people. We get so focused on staying in one lane that we forget we\u2019re allowed to build something different.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moon entered the MBA program expecting it could help him climb the ranks at Microsoft. What he found was a cohort of fellow students and a number of mentors who encouraged him to look beyond the narrow version of success he had inherited. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through classes like sustainable business, leadership and social responsibility, creativity and innovation management, and global economics, he began to see new ways to connect his values, interests and professional strengths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flexible structure of UW Bothell\u2019s School of Business MBA\u00a0program<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0made it\u00a0possible for him to learn even as\u00a0a full-time professional\u00a0and parent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning from experts\u00a0and peers\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moon points to several faculty members<\/a> who helped broaden his perspective, especially Dr. Brandon Fleming, whose sustainable business course introduced him to the idea that sustainability is as much about people and systems as it is about the environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also took classes from instructors who were active founders, board members and angel investors, which made the world of startups and entrepreneurship feel accessible rather than abstract. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey weren\u2019t just teaching theory,\u201d Moon said. \u201cThey were showing us what it looks like in practice.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was the cohort \u2014 the late-night group work, the shared struggles, the conversations after class \u2014 that made the deepest personal impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re meeting with your cohort five times a week,\u201d he said. \u201cThey get to know you. They see talents you don\u2019t see in yourself. That encouragement pushed me out of my comfort zone.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discovering his own formula for success\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As Moon advanced in the program, he started taking on roles outside his job: board appointments, community leadership positions and regional advocacy work. His service on the Mukilteo Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission led to his appointment to the city council, where he now serves as vice president. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverything was happening at once,\u201d he said. \u201cI was serving on the council, raising a family, taking MBA classes and getting involved in new projects. It sounds like too much, but for the first time, it all felt aligned.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MBA gave him a new definition of success \u2014 one that wasn\u2019t tied to title or salary but instead to impact, autonomy and connection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what the program unlocked. You don\u2019t have to follow one formula. You can create your own,\u201d he said. \u201cFor me, success is about spending time with my family, serving my community and doing work that matters. The MBA showed me I had the ability to design that life.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving\u00a0into sustainability and innovation\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This new sense of clarity and purpose became especially important when Moon was unexpectedly laid off from Microsoft. Instead of panicking, he took a step back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNormally, I would have scrambled to get back into a big company,\u201d he said. \u201cBut this time, I asked myself, \u2018What do I actually want to do? And what do I want my work to mean?\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the MBA program\u00a0at UW Bothell\u2019s School of Business, Moon had reconnected with fellow Husky\u00a0alumnus\u00a0Dan Uhm<\/a>,\u00a0who is\u00a0the founder of Zeolite Composites<\/a>, a clean-tech startup focused on low-carbon concrete and environmental remediation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was simply an interesting connection at first. As Moon grew deeper into sustainability coursework, however, he began to see how his MBA skills could translate into the startup world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Uhm invited him to join Zeolite full-time in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFinancially, it didn\u2019t make sense,\u201d Moon said, \u201cbut purpose-wise, it made all the sense in the world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building\u00a0community\u00a0bridges\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, Moon is a partner at Zeolite, which has garnered international attention for its innovations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He leads strategic communications and helps bridge the company\u2019s technology with researchers,\u00a0cities,\u00a0agencies\u00a0and\u00a0other\u00a0community partners. The company collaborates with\u00a0the\u00a0UW\u00a0in\u00a0Seattle, UW\u00a0Tacoma\u00a0and Washington State University,\u00a0for example,\u00a0sponsoring\u00a0graduate and undergraduate research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moon said his work at Zeolite has strengthened his role in regional public service, too. He has helped connect the company with Mukilteo\u2019s stormwater management team, piloting methods that dramatically cut processing times, reduce environmental risks and support long-term infrastructure resilience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSustainability isn\u2019t just tech or policy,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the intersection of both. My MBA helped me see how to connect those pieces.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leading with purpose\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moon\u2019s\u00a0UW Bothell\u00a0story is not\u00a0just\u00a0about corporate\u00a0success.\u00a0Rather,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about\u00a0higher education\u00a0expanding\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost people have passions and skills they aren\u2019t using,\u201d he said. \u201cThe MBA gives you the tools to unlock them. It gives you a network that pushes you to try things. And it reduces the risk of taking a chance.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked what he hopes other School of Business alumni, prospective students or curious professionals take from his journey, he offered this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
