{"id":10126,"date":"2015-09-15T09:43:56","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T09:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=10126"},"modified":"2026-10-01T19:58:52","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T19:58:52","slug":"admissions-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/admissions\/apply\/first-year\/admissions-requirements","title":{"rendered":"Admissions Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-box-shadow is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minimum University Admission Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following minimum requirements must be met in order for your application to receive a <a href=\"\/admissions\/apply\/application-review\">holistic admissions review<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completion of <strong><a href=\"#cadrs\">College Academic Distribution Requirements<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum cumulative <strong>GPA of 2.0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unofficial transcript<\/strong> from most recent high school attended<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/admissions\/apply\/english-language-proficiency\" id=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/admissions\/apply\/english-language-proficiency\"><strong>Proof of English language proficiency<\/strong><\/a> is required if you completed at least 7 years of primary and secondary education:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At schools where English was not the language of instruction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In countries outside the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the United Kingdom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Any document submitted to the Office of Admissions to supplement the application becomes part of the official admissions record and cannot be released back to the student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please check with <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.uwb.edu\/portal\/counselor_portal?cmd=fy-search\">your admissions counselor<\/a> if you have any questions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional information for international students<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Currently enrolled in high school:<\/strong> Submit transcripts for grades 9\u201311 and list courses currently in progress.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the U.S. equivalent of grade 9 was completed as part of junior high school in your country, submit your final year of junior high school transcript.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Did not complete high school:<\/strong> Submit transcripts for all years completed, including grade 9 (or its equivalent).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coursework completed before grade 9 or its equivalent does not satisfy CADR requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cadrs\">College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance with Washington Student Achievement Council requirements and to ensure that students entering UW Bothell are adequately prepared to succeed in college, all first-year student applicants are required to complete a minimum level of preparation in the below subject areas through high school or college course work prior to entering the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Completing your CADRs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost all applicants will have satisfied these subject requirements through high school course work, which is generally defined as that completed in grades 9-12. <a href=\"\/admissions\/apply\/FAQ#faq-homeschool\">Homeschool applicants may require additional information<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have not completed all CADR requirements through high school coursework, you may use college-level coursework to fulfill the remaining requirements. In general, five quarter credits or three semester credits of college coursework is equivalent to one year of high school study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you completed three years of English in high school, you can use one college-level English composition or literature course to fulfill the fourth year of English required for admission. A single college course may also satisfy both an admission CADR and a UW Bothell graduation requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must earn a passing grade in all core subject requirements, including a Pass for a course taken on a Pass\/Not Pass basis. However, if you are using college coursework to fulfill a CADR, we strongly encourage you to choose a letter or numerical grade when possible. A letter or numerical grade may also allow the course to count toward your major or general university graduation requirements, which have specific grading requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"english\">English Composition\/Literature<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Four years of study are required, at least three of which must be in college-preparatory composition or literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of the four years may be satisfied by courses in drama as literature, public speaking, debate, journalistic writing, business English, or English as a Second Language (ESL).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Courses that are generally not acceptable include those identified as remedial or applied (e.g., acting, basic English skills, developmental reading, library, speed reading, newspaper staff, remedial English, review English, vocabulary, yearbook\/annual).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For international students<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>English courses taken in another country are considered equivalent to ESL unless taken in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the United Kingdom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Four high school years of Composition and\/or Literature courses in the student&#8217;s native language will satisfy this requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If made up through college course work:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>College course work must be at the 100 level or higher. For the composition\/literature component, generally any course with an English or Writing prefix is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of the four years may be satisfied by a college course in speech, drama as literature, journalistic writing, business English, ESL or engineering\/technical writing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"math\">Mathematics<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years of study are required, at minimum at the level of algebra, geometry and second-year algebra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An algebra course completed in the last year of junior high school may partially satisfy the requirement if the second-year algebra is completed in secondary school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arithmetic, pre-algebra, business math and statistics will not satisfy the requirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mathematics course work taken in the senior year may overlap with the Senior Year Math-Based Quantitative requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If made up through college course work:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>If high school preparation in mathematics was insufficient, one of the courses listed below is required:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intermediate Algebra: At Washington community colleges, qualifying courses in intermediate algebra are listed as equivalent to MATH 098 in the University of Washington Equivalency Guide. The course must be completed with a grade of &#8216;C&#8217; (2.0) or better, even though it does not transfer to UW Bothell as college credit and the grade earned in the course is not used in computing GPA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trigonometry: The course must be completed with a grade of &#8216;C&#8217; (2.0) or better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mathematics courses with intermediate algebra as a prerequisite: This includes any higher-level math courses such as elementary functions, calculus, and beyond. Courses in statistics, logic or computer science do not satisfy the mathematics requirement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"social-studies\">Social Studies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years of study are required in history or in any of the social sciences (e.g., anthropology, contemporary world problems, economics, geography, government, political science, psychology, sociology). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Religion courses, consumer economics, student government or community service do not satisfy the requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If made up through college course work:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses in the social sciences (e.g., anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology) satisfy the requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"science\">Science<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>3 years of Science courses are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 years must be in laboratory-based courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 year must be in an algebra-based science course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 year must be in either Biology, Chemistry or Physics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some courses may fulfill more than one science requirement and if taken in the senior year, may also fulfill the senior year math-based quantitative requirement (any algebra-based science course).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"world-language\">World Language<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years of study in the same world language are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The world language requirement will be considered satisfied for students who complete more than half their primary and secondary education in school(s):\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>where English was not the language of instruction or <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in countries other than the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International students who entered the U.S. education system prior to the seventh grade must satisfy the world language requirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any natural language that has been formally studied may be used to satisfy this requirement, including American Sign Language (AMESLAN, the language of the deaf community) and languages no longer spoken, such as Latin and ancient Greek. However, neither computer &#8216;languages&#8217; nor forms of deaf signing aside from AMESLAN are acceptable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A world language course taken in the eighth grade may satisfy one year of the requirement if the second-year course is completed in high school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If made up through college course work:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have not studied a world language in high school must complete 10 quarter credits or 6 semester credits of a single world language in college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who completed one year of a world language in high school must complete 5 quarter credits or 3 semester credits of the second course in that same language sequence in college (e.g., FREN 102).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If using an exam:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who have not completed high school or college course work in a world language can demonstrate their proficiency using test scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Advanced Placement (AP): A score of 3, 4 or 5 on a College Board Advanced Placement world language exam will be awarded 5, 10 or 15 transfer college credits and satisfy the world language requirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International Baccalaureate (IB): A score of 5, 6 or 7 on an International Baccalaureate Program Higher Level world language B exam will be awarded 5, 10 or 15 transfer college credits and satisfy the world language requirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Level &amp; AS Level (A\/AS): With a passing grade, the A Level world language exam will satisfy the world language requirement and award 15 transfer college credits. AS Level exams may also meet the requirement and award 7.5 credits with a passing grade, but this varies by language. <strong>If the exam shows the \u201cFL\u201d designation under \u201cMeets UW requirement,\u201d it satisfies the requirement.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">University of Washington Placement:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Placement into the third course of a world language by a <a href=\"https:\/\/advising.uw.edu\/academic-planning\/choosing-your-major-courses\/placement-testing\/foreign-language-placement-test\/\">UW Placement Exam<\/a> satisfies the world language requirement. For placement and proficiency testing information, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/advising.uw.edu\/academic-planning\/choosing-your-major-courses\/placement-testing\/foreign-language-placement-test\/#:~:text=Languages%20taught%20at%20the%20UW\">UW Undergraduate Advising page<\/a>. If the Testing Center does not offer the test for your language, it may be possible to have proficiency level evaluated by a UW faculty member in a one-on-one test; contact the appropriate UW language department to inquire about this possibility. Placement tests taken at other colleges will not satisfy the world language requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"qsr\">Senior Year Math-Based Quantitative Course<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>One year of math-based quantitative course work is required in the senior year. Any of the following courses will meet this requirement if taken during 12th grade:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The third-year level of math, such as intermediate algebra (Algebra II)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fourth-year level of math, such as pre-calculus, math analysis or calculus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A math-based quantitative course (statistics)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An Algebra-based science course (this may also count toward the lab science requirement)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An AP Computer Science course<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If made up through college course work:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>College courses in math (e.g., pre-calculus, calculus, statistics) or algebra-based science satisfy this requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fine-arts\">Fine, Visual, or Performing Arts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Students must complete one quarter (trimester) or one semester (half a year) of coursework in the fine, visual or performing arts. Acceptable courses include art appreciation, band, ceramics, choir, dance, dramatics performance and production, drawing, fiber arts, graphic arts, metal design, music appreciation, music theory, orchestra, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courses generally not accepted include architecture, color guard, creative writing, drafting, drill team, fashion design, world languages, interior design, sewing, speech, web design or graphics, woodworking and yearbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If made up through college course work:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Two quarter credits or two semester credits satisfy the requirement, chosen from art, art history, cinema\/filmmaking, dance, drama (except drama as literature), music or photography. Courses in architecture are generally not acceptable, except for those in architectural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" id=\"elective\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elective in CADRs Subjects<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If taken in high school:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>One semester of study is required.
