This selection places UW Bothell among a small group of colleges and universities collectively committed to using data in smarter, more student-centered ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this matters\u2014and why now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colleges nationwide are facing heightened pressure not only to enroll students but to help them persist, complete credentials, and enter meaningful careers. PDAN brings together cross-functional teams\u2014researchers, faculty, advisers, administrators, and data professionals\u2014to tackle that challenge through a year-long learning community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-highlight-paragraph-primary has-h-4-font-size\">For UW Bothell, joining PDAN reflects a clear commitment: to use data not simply as a record of what happened, but as a tool to understand root causes, remove barriers, and design interventions that help more students graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-medium\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>This work is especially urgent around a critical but often overlooked moment: the <strong>transition from the second to the third year<\/strong>. Many students who successfully navigate their first year still lose momentum later on\u2014often due to major changes, financial strain, workload pressures, unclear pathways, or misaligned advising. A student who changes majors late may lose credits; another who balances full-time work may fall behind on key milestones. These friction points can derail progress toward a degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By focusing intentionally on this transition, UW Bothell aims to illuminate what gets in students\u2019 way\u2014and build structures that help them continue forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the network works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the coming year, UW Bothell will collaborate with peer institutions across the country\u2014four-year universities, community colleges, and minority-serving institutions\u2014to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Share insights and promising practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Troubleshoot common challenges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test and refine data-driven strategies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build long-term institutional capacity for evidence-based decision-making<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>IHEP and AIR will provide guidance on connecting analytics to real-world policy and practice, helping partner institutions turn numbers into meaningful action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For UW Bothell, this means more than analyzing datasets. It means <strong>translating insights into concrete policies and student supports<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refining advising models to catch momentum loss earlier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identifying students at risk of falling off track based on credit milestones or course patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aligning supports during the second-to-third-year transition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing clear, shared metrics to monitor progress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with IHEP and AIR, UW Bothell will establish key performance indicators to close the second-to-third-year retention gap and improve completion outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this work may lead to<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As UW Bothell digs into the first year of PDAN, several early outcomes are anticipated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New early-warning dashboards<\/strong> that highlight risk factors\u2014such as stalled credit accumulation, repeated courses, or late major changes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evidence-based interventions<\/strong> tailored specifically to second- and third-year students, including redesigned advising touchpoints, peer mentoring, or short academic \u201cbridge\u201d supports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Policy and curricular improvements<\/strong>, such as clearer degree maps, better major-change guidance, credit-loss prevention strategies, and more responsive financial aid adjustments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-campus learning<\/strong>, as UW Bothell collaborates with peer institutions to share successes, identify pitfalls, and scale strategies that work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These efforts directly support UW Bothell\u2019s mission to create accessible, student-centered pathways that lead to timely, successful degree completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A call to the UW Bothell community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative isn\u2019t limited to data analysts or administrators\u2014it invites the entire campus community to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students, faculty, staff, and partners are encouraged to engage with questions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What makes the second-to-third-year transition uniquely challenging?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where do we see students stalling, losing credits, or changing direction?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which supports, policies, or practices could help them sustain momentum?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By pairing these questions with transparent data, UW Bothell is empowering its community to shape solutions collaboratively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next year, UW Bothell will provide updates on how PDAN is informing new approaches to advising, pathway design, policy alignment, and student support.
