Tilden Receives 2013 Distinguished Teaching Award

Ron Tilden is the recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Teaching Award. Tilden is a lecturer in the UW Bothell School of Business.

Tilden came to UW Bothell in 2001 as a part-time lecturer. He joined the faculty on a full-time basis in 2007 after a successful career in financial management in the technology sector. Before joining the university, he was chief financial officer of WRQ, Inc., a software company in Seattle. Earlier in his career, he was the chief financial officer of Intermec Corporation, and also held various positions with the international accounting firm of Deloitte and Touche.

“Since joining the UW Bothell faculty, Ron has consistently been an outstanding mentor, teacher and citizen,” says UW Bothell chancellor Kenyon S. Chan. “Although he has been nominated twice before for the Distinguished Teaching Award, Ron clearly rose to the top this year with a compelling dossier that included a package of letters from students, alumni, his fellow faculty, and the larger business and non-profit community.”

At UW Bothell, Tilden played an integral role in launching the accounting degree option that accepted its first students in 2008. He also worked with students to launch Beta Alpha Psi, the highly successful honorary accounting organization which placed first in national competition in 2012. Tilden also serves as the group’s faculty advisor.

Tilden has taught a wide variety of courses including the required courses at the junior level to electives at the MBA level. His courses have spanned the disciplines of economics, finance and accounting. He teaches courses that range from managerial economics, financial accounting, managerial accounting, corporate finance, investment analysis, intermediate accounting, to finance and accounting for the non-business majors.

“Ron’s contributions reach beyond the classroom,” Chan says. “He mentors students in ways that are critical to their professional development and continued success. His work to start Beta Alpha Psi is legendary.”

Tilden earned his BA and MBA from the University of Washington. He was previously nominated for the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2010 and 2011.

The UW Bothell Distinguished Teaching Award, created in 1995, is presented each year to a faculty member who has demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching, exemplifying what it means to fulfill the academic mission of the University of Washington Bothell.
