Off Campus Student Housing - Things to Consider
Living on your own for the first time can be very exciting and can cause some anxiety. Here are a few tips to get you started:
- Check the length of the lease you are signing and see if you can switch to month-to-month after your lease is up.
- Most apartments will require a deposit. Some will require first/last months rent plus a deposit. This means a $900 per month apartment could require $2700 cash to move in, or more.
- Do you have a pet? Not all housing options allow pets, so make sure you do your own research. Additional fees maybe charged for having a pet.
- Is the place you are looking at on a bus route to work or campus? Is there enough parking for you and your roommate?
- What utilities are included in your rent?
- Is there a grocery store close by?
- Visit a prospective apartment during different times of the day to get a feel of the surroundings.
- If there is a yard, who is responsible for the maintenance?
