Financial Aid

The Karen Morse Scholarship

Amount

$6,000 applied over autumn, winter, spring

Karen Morse was born on December 4, 1948. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1965. Karen was an excellent student and a life-long learner. She had a natural curiosity and always wanted to learn more. She worked on brain teasers and word puzzles whenever she had a minute. She almost always earned straight A's, but once got a "B" in high school because her paper was too long (over 100 pages).

Karen was also a writer, artist, and photographer. She wrote poetry and a family history. She made every type of craft imaginable and was an excellent photographer.

Helping others was always on Karen's agenda. She participated in numerous fund-raisers and volunteered to teach adults to read and speak English. She taught disabled people how to snow-ski and volunteered to rock crack babies. She often delivered food to the needy on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Karen worked at Seafirst Bank for 17 years. She was offered a severance package when Seafirst merged with the Bank of America. Karen faced a real challenge in finding a new job after the severance package. She attended Green River Community College and earned her AA degree at that time.

Karen's greatest joy was her family and she greatly loved her two sons and her many nephews and nieces. Karen was diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and died on the first day of the year in 2000. She is survived and honored by her 2 boys, who have dedicated this scholarship in her name. They would like this scholarship to go to someone with a love of learning who also is willing to volunteer and help out others.
