Kristina Hillesland

Kristina Hillesland received her BS in Biology from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA and her PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. She has spent several years doing postdoctoral research in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the University of Washington. Kristina developed two model microbial systems for studying evolutionary processes and their effects on antagonistic or mutually beneficial interactions between species. These model systems will allow students to study evolution using a combination of experimentation and observation during thousands of generations of bacterial evolution. Her research has been published in several journals including the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, and was featured in the German newspaper The Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung and in the Journal Club section of Nature.
