School Placement Basics

Students in the Secondary and Middle Level Teacher certification program gain valuable experience under the supervision of a licensed teacher.  Beginning with “September Experience”, students are paired with a cooperating teacher in a nearby school district by the K12 Partnerships and Placement Coordinator.  Students learn how cooperating teachers prepare for the start of the school year, and build learning communities in the classroom.  Over the course of the fall and winter quarters, students transition from observing, to assisting, to co-teaching, to assuming all facets of the teacher role.  Students earn credit for their school experience by enrolling in seminar classes BEDUC 591 (September Experience), and BEDUC 564 (fall & winter).

Intern Substitute Certification

Background: OSPI created the Intern Substitute Certificate to create an opportunity for districts to use student interns in the event their cooperating teacher is out during their student teaching quarter (this makes you eligible to sub ONLY for your cooperating teacher and ONLY during your student teaching quarter).  UW Bothell School of Educational Studies will not accept or process the Intern Substitute Certificate before mid December.

  1. First check with your assigned district human resources director to see if the Intern Substitute Certificate is approved by your district. Get approval from both your cooperating teacher and building principal- there is no form for this but critical and required.
  2. After getting approval from both cooperating teacher and principal, notify Jon Howeiler of your intent to complete the online forms for the Intern Substitute Certificate on OSPI’s ‘E-Cert’ webpage.  On or around the second week of winter quarter at UWB, he will then give approval in the ‘E-Cert’ system in your account in the Communication Log, or Comm Log and notify your school district of the approval on the university’s end.
  3. Candidate completes remaining online forms and pays the state fee for the Intern Substitute Certificate and completes school district employment paperwork.  Once approved by OSPI, school district can verify completion online and/or print out candidate’s Intern Substitute Certificate.

Completion Dossier

Students complete a dossier that reflects their entire graduate school experience comprised of:

  • An Introduction
  • Four substantive projects selected from individual graduate education courses that best show how the student met the program learning goals.
  • A product that reflects the student's application of knowledge through a capstone project.
  • A program reflection.

Students in the Secondary and Middle Level Teacher Ceritification M.Ed. program have the option of completing one of four application of knowledge products:

  • Reflective Practice Portfolio (designed specifically for the Secondary and Middle Level Program to seamlessly integrate learning from student teaching and academic coursework)
  • Practitioner-Focused Research
  • Critical Literature Review
  • Curriculum Development Project

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will have earned both a Master of Education degree and a Washington State Residency Certificate with an Endorsement in General Science, Biology, English/Language Arts, History, Mathematics, or Social Studies.
