Senior Portfolio Overview and Requirements


If you were admitted Summer 2016 or thereafter into the RN to BSN Program; this requiremet does not apply to you.


Course: Senior Portfolio; BNURS 495
Credits: 1 credit(Credit/No Credit grading)

The Senior Portfolio is required as part of the RN  to BSN program. It is a portfolio of the academic work you have completed throughout the program ensuring you have meet the learning objectives of the degree. View the Senior Portfolio PowerPoint Presentation for an overview.

When you are in the Senior Portfolio;
  • Initiate contact with your instructor to develop the portfolio
  • Select and submit examples of acadmic work that represent the BNURS 495 course objectives
  • Write a reflective summary of your academic work using the guidelines.
  • Submit your original University Goal Statement which you submitted with your application to the program. If you need a copy of it, email; include your full name, quarter your started and your cohort. A scanned copy will be returned to you via eamil within two business  days. You do not email your advisor for this.
  • Submit to your instructor as directed.
Course Objectives
  1. To identify student's scholarly work appropriate for inclusion in the portfolio.
  2. To write a summary which reflects the student's achievements in the areas of critical thinking, writing and speaking and theory-based nursing interventions.
Course Overview

There is no specific course outline. The portfolio is a tool that demonstrates the progress of a student toward individual and program goals.  It provides a framework for the evaluation of the quality and improvement of a student's work over the course of the program.  It contains examples of student accomplishments, papers, and evaluations from faculty and self.  The portfolio contains a reflective summary on the learning that has occurred in selected areas such as critical thinking, writing and speaking, and theory-based nursing interventions.

The portfolio essay is a personal reflective summary of your personal and professional development during the course of the RN to BSN program in three selected areas:  critical thinking, communication both writing and speaking, and the application of theory based nursing interventions.  As you review your experiences over the year or two you have spent in the program, you should think about the specific classes you have had and what stands out to you as significant examples of your learning in the areas of critical thinking, oral and written communication skills and application to practice.  Select papers you wrote that are examples of your growth in one or more of these areas. You may use these to support your claims about your development.  Make sure you reference the papers in the essay text and explain your rationale for including them.  Additionally, you need to use specific personal classroom or clinical experience example as evidence of your growth in all the three areas.


All Bothell Nursing Students complete a Portfolio Self-Assessment during the final quarter of their nursing coursework.  Students register for BNURS 495 during this final Nursing quarter with the instructor of their choice.

The Portfolio Self-Assessment demonstrates the student's progress toward individual and program goals.  Students develop a portfolio of academic work and write an essay that summarizes their progress and accomplishments while in the Bothell Nursing Program.


The following materials must be included in the portfolio as appendix items (do not include originals as the portfolio will not be returned):

  • A copy of your original personal statement from your UWB Nursing Program application (if you no longer have a copy, email with your full name, quarter you started and your cohort).
  • A copy of your final paper from BNURS 350
  • A copy of two other papers of your choice.  One of these two papers must be from a Nursing course.  The second may be from Nursing or from a non-Nursing elective.

Compose an essay describing your personal and professional growth during the Program.  Use the materials listed above to address the following:

  • Your development in critical thinking
  • Your development in oral and written communication
  • One example of how you have applied what you have learned in this program to your clinical practice
  • Your re-stated or revised personal and professional nursing goals
  • The essay should be typed, double-spaced, and no longer than 4-5 pages.
Critical thinking will be evaluated on the following:
  • accurate interpretation of evidence (statements, graphics, questions, etc.)
  • identification of major arguments or positions
  • thoughtful analysis and evaluation of major arguments or positions
  • explanation and justification of reasons and assumptions in support of conclusion
  • fair-minded analysis that follows where the evidence and reasoning leads
