All first year students will be assigned a mentor who will serve as a guide and resource from before orientation through the first quarter at the University of Washington Bothell. The mentors contact their mentees throughout the summer and answer questions about the mentees' transition to the University. Mentors also help new students with how to register for orientations, create events for new students to attend and make friends, direct students to resources, and provide advice from a student's perspective.
Students who have a mentor their first year will allow them to explore new ideas in confidence as well as providing them the opportunity to think about career options and progress in their academic career.
“Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximize their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be.” Eric Parsloe, The Oxford School of Coaching & Mentoring.
