BOTHELL, Wash. – This past September, the University of Washington Bothell co-sponsored the 11th annual conference of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life (IA).
IA, founded in 1999, is a national consortium of universities leading the efforts to transform higher education by advocating for public and community-engaged scholarship in art, humanities and design.
UW Bothell faculty, staff and students were involved in the conference as participants on panels and roundtables, planners of regional site visits, and as organizers for the conference as a whole. Additionally, UW Bothell Chancellor Kenyon Chan moderated the opening plenary on transforming higher education through engagement.
UW Bothell’s Dr. Bruce Burgett, Director and Professor in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences Program, currently serves as the Vice Chair of the IA National Advisory Board and was the co-chair of the 2010 conference steering committee.
Says Dr. Burgett, “We were excited to co-sponsor the conference because IA and UW Bothell share a mission of transforming higher education in ways that make global institutions responsive to local needs.”
One of the site visits included in the conference involved the UW Bothell wetlands restoration project. Visitors explored how, natural and not so natural, campus environments might generate productive campus-community collaboration and foster innovations in research and teaching in the environmental arts and humanities.
UW Bothell looks forward to a continued partnership with IA through future conferences and academic research opportunities.
