BOTHELL, Wash. – University of Washington Bothell’s Bruce Burgett has been appointed to serve a two-year term (2010-2012) as Vice President of the Cultural Studies Association (CSA).

The CSA, founded in 2003, is a major professional organization in the United States for cultural studies, providing a forum for scholars to exchange their work and ideas across disciplinary lines and institutional locations.

Dr. Burgett, Director of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at UW Bothell, became involved with the CSA in 2005, as a result of his own research interests and his involvement in the development of UW Bothell’s Master of Arts in Cultural Studies Program.

The Master of Arts in Cultural Studies Program was started in 2008 and graduated its first cohort of students in 2010.  It is one of very few programs nationally that partners the interdisciplinary study of art and culture with a community-based learning network.

Says Dr. Burgett, “Cultural studies is important because we live in a moment when the horizon of culture has vanished even as the cultural disciplines in the university continue to claim culture as their object of study. The field tracks the movement and power of culture across diverse sites where cultural knowledge is made and remade.“
