Bothell, Wash. – A monument to honor student veterans is in development on the University of Washington Bothell campus. The Veterans Archway recognizes the service that veterans have made and celebrates their transition to academic and civilian life.

The design of the monument includes an archway with two columns and a centerpiece with an inscription that invites visitors to remember and honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Veterans Archway has been organized and planned by the UW Bothell Student Veterans Association. It will be located at the northeast corner of the new sports complex with access to the North Creek regional trail.

“This space is a tangible gift that we can give to student veterans to say that they are appreciated and acknowledge their transition from active duty to student life,” says Ben Wiselogle, a UW Bothell alumni and chair of the Veterans Archway Committee. “It is something permanent that we feel our student veterans have earned.”

“Veterans have made unrivaled sacrifices for our community and our country,” says Kenyon Chan, Chancellor of UW Bothell. “This archway is our way to show our appreciation for their service in a permanent monument. The archway will provide a space for our community to remember the service of our student-veterans to our country.”

There were approximately 155 student veterans and dependents attending UW Bothell at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. This number has increased by 75 percent in the last year mostly due to the drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Veterans Archway is anticipated to cost just under $60,000. As a gift to the university and community by generous contributors, the project will be 100 percent funded by donations; no state or university money will be used. To date the students have raised more than $14,000 toward construction, including a generous $5,000 contribution from the VFW Lake Washington Post 2995.
