Ross Named Diversity Director at UW Bothell
Bothell, Wash. – Terryl Ross, Ph.D., has been named the new director of diversity at the University of Washington Bothell. Ross, a University of Washington alumnus, will be the university’s first full-time director of diversity.
“Diversity is a core value at UW Bothell and Terryl has a demonstrated record of inspiring and leading productive dialogue and progress,” says Chancellor Wolf Yeigh. “His appointment is an important step in advancing our diversity efforts at this university.”
UW Bothell is one of the most diverse campuses in the state of Washington. About 42 percent of its students are students of color from diverse backgrounds; 46 percent of students are the first in their families to attend college.
Ross is a scholar and activist who brings rich experience in higher education and civic engagement. He counts the 11 years spent earning his doctorate at the University of Washington among his greatest achievements, as he balanced his academic pursuits with part-time jobs that ultimately led to the creation of the UW Diversity Compacts in 2000 and 2001.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to serve this campus, this community and Chancellor Yeigh,” says Ross. “I believe in his leadership and vision. There’s no place like home.”
For the last three years, Ross has been touring the nation working on a documentary series and curriculum about social justice in America. That documentary will debut in February 2015. From 2004-2011 he was director of community and diversity at Oregon State University.
Ross was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army from 1982 to 1987. He holds a doctorate in educational communication and technology from the University of Washington. He holds a master’s degree in public relations from Syracuse University and two Bachelor of Arts degrees from Eastern Washington University.
