New ASUWB officers, senators for 2016-2017

Tanya Kumar is the newly elected president of Associated Students of the University of Washington Bothell.

She and 10 others were chosen in the spring elections as the ASUWB Executive Council officers and senators for 2016-2017. The officers begin July 1 and the senators Sept. 1.

Kumar says she wants to be “available to all students as someone approachable and available to share my personal experience and offer guidance regarding safety, academic struggles, and conflicts regarding culture and ethnicity in this community.”

She says, “This campus is blessed with numerous diversity groups and their voices need to be heard and welcomed at every extent of decision making regarding their future.”

Other officers are Vice President Oneira Gonzalez, Director of Business Operations Umar Sayed, Director of Public Relations Dom Juarez and Director of Student Advocacy Aretha Basu.

The senior senators are Justin Han and Dhwani Vekaria. The junior senators are Christian Avalos and Marquis Henderson. The sophomore senators are Leah Shin and Shugla Kakar.

A total of 901 students voted, which was 29.7 percent of students eligible to vote, according to the Office of Student Engagement and Activities.
