05/05/2016 Runners in the University of Washington Bothell 5k Run/Walk are not only enjoying a brisk outing with friends they’re also supporting students with much-appreciated scholarships. “Receiving this scholarship was a tremendous help,” says Cruz Garibay, one of three students to receive $1,000 this year. “Since I am responsible for financing my own education, awards like the UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship help me get one step closer towards achieving my degree,” says Garibay, who registered to run Saturday. Another winner, Amani Carithers, says she’s feeling the love and intends to pay it forward. “The support of alumni gave me the inspiration to support other students any way I can,” she says. “Students supporting other students is what gives UW Bothell the community feeling that everyone is attracted to. This makes me want to support students financially once I am an alumna.” Saturday’s event is the 11th anniversary of the UW Bothell 5k Run/Walk. It has raised more than $150,000 since its inception and it’s now a part of the UW’s Dawg Dash series. This growing race is expected to host nearly 900 runners and walkers, and will welcome over 1,200 people on campus! The event features not only the 5k Run/Walk through campus and downtown Bothell, but also includes the Cascadia Pups and Cubs 1k. There will be music, family-oriented attractions like face painting and a bouncy house, a complimentary breakfast immediately after the race, prizes, a silent auction, giveaways for participants, and friendly faces at our sponsor booths. All proceeds from the race benefit UW Bothell student scholarships. This run is one of the only events in the area devoted to this ever-increasingly important cause of providing access to an excellent higher education experience. Join UW Bothell and the Alumni Council as we proudly support students in their endeavors to continue their education in difficult economic times. Online registration ends at midnight Thursday, May 5. Use the discount code UWB16 at checkout to receive $5 off your registration. Walk-up registration also available Saturday.
