Perfect day for alumni 5K, block party

Uncertain spring weather was perfect May 7 for two big University of Washington Bothell alumni weekend events – cool enough in the morning for a comfortable 5K run/walk, warm enough in the afternoon to quaff beer at the block party and brewfest.

Nearly 650 people ran or walked in the 11th annual 5K, now part of the Dawg Dash series, and more than 1,000 took part in the second annual block party and brewfest. Together they raised about $12,000 for student scholarships, said Sean Marsh, director of alumni engagement and philanthropy.

The best time for the 5K through and around the University of Washington Bothell-Cascadia College campus was turned in by 15-year-old Dylan Lennon, left, in 18 minutes, 12 second. Lindsey Pokorzynski was the top female finisher at 20:28.

Among the hundreds of runners was Cruz Garibay, the recipient of one of this year’s $1,000 UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship.

“Receiving this scholarship was a tremendous help,” says Garibay. “Since I am responsible for financing my own education, awards like the UW Bothell Alumni Scholarship help me get one step closer towards achieving my degree.”

There was even more fun in the afternoon with a downtown Bothell parking lot was turned into a block party with local craft beers, live bands and food trucks.

Some sponsors who supported the block party include Bothell Furniture, the Spencer 68 apartments, the 104 apartments, the LINQ development in Kenmore, the Carter on the Park apartments, and Evergreen Karate.

Many of those also sponsored the 5K, whose main sponsors additionally include WSECU, Evergreen Health, Mom’s Fine Food and Quality Care Physical Therapy.
