BOTHELL, Wash. - University of Washington Bothell Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Susan Jeffords has announced Dr. Bradley Portin as incoming Director of the Education Program. Says Jeffords, "I am excited to have Dr. Portin join our campus. I know that with his vast experiences and knowledge the program will continue to grow and succeed."
As Director, Portin will oversee the Education Program and its faculty and staff. The Program is home to over 300 students and boasts solid Masters of Education offerings as well as K-8, professional, and secondary teaching certification options to meet the region's continuous demands for quality teacher education.
Portin is currently on faculty for the College of Education at the University of Washington's Seattle campus. A former public school principal, Portin has spent the last decade focusing on current roles of school principals, teacher leaders and how roles are changing to meet learning needs for all students In addition, he has been co-principal investigator for two Wallace Foundation-funded studies and co-authored a number of monographs including Making Sense of Leading Schools: A Study of the Principalship (2003, Portin, DeArmond, Gundlach, and Schneider), Roles, Responsibilities, and Authority of School Leaders: Patterns in Current Research, Theory, and Practice (2006, Portin, Knapp, Alejano, and Marzolf, 2006), and Leading, Learning, and Leadership Support (2006, Knapp, Copland, Plecki, Portin, and Colleagues). Dr. Portin maintains extensive links with researchers internationally in their efforts to expand preparation, support, and research for school leaders. Dr. Portin is on the editorial board for the journal, Educational Assessment, Evaluation and Accountability and has held visiting professorships in Norway, England, and the United Arab Emirates.
Portin received his BA in Business Education and Elementary Education from the University of Washington, his Masters in Education in School Administration from Seattle Pacific University, and his Ph.D. in Educational Studies from the University of Oxford.
Portin will assume the position of Program Director on July 1, replacing outgoing Interim Director Linda Watts.
