BOTHELL, Wash. - The University of Washington Bothell will host a Sexual Health and Education Conference on campus on Monday, May 19, on campus in UW2-005.
The event, sponsored by the faculty and students from BIS 219 The Politics of Sex Education, the Office of Student Life, the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences and Nursing Programs, the Center for Undergraduate Studies and Programs, the Gay-Straight Alliance and Students for Choice, is free and open to the public.
Noon-5:45 p.m. Sexual Health and Wellness Fair
Fun event features educational materials, give-aways, information tables and games. (Fair will be held in the Commons.)
Noon-1:30 p.m. "Talking with Your Kids about Sex"
Workshop provides tips and strategies for increasing comfort in talking about sexuality. Instructors include UW Bothell Professor Wadiya Udell, Cascadia Community College Professor Catherine Crane, and representatives from Planned Parenthood.
1:45-3:30 p.m. "Sexual Rights and Sexual Health for Alternative Sexualities"
Panelists discuss the unique challenges and opportunities for sexual health for "alternative sexualities." Panel features Allena Gabosh, Exec. Director of the Center for Sex-Positive Culture, Teri Ciacchi, a polyamorous educator, and Elle Sachs, a BDSM educator.
3:45-5:30 p.m. "Sexual Education and Washington State Law"
Panelists discuss the impact of federally funded abstinence-only sex education on Washington state schools, and how this will be impacted by the 2008 Healthy Youth Act which mandates medically accurate sex education. Panel features Stephanie Ballasiotes, a health educator with Northshore Public Health and the Family Planning Program, Courtney Bell of the UW Bothell Master of Arts in Public Policy Program, Robin Wallace-Wright, Community Educator for Planned Parenthood, and Brieanne Warren of UW Bothell Students for Choice.
6:00-8:00 p.m. "Why Are We All So Scared About Sex?"
Keynote speech by Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Professor of Sociology at UW Seattle and a nationally known relationship expert. Reception to follow.
