In the first year of the MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics, you will take six required courses. The second year of the MFA needs to be actively defined by you. In Spring Quarter of your first year, we will ask you to begin thinking about the two different parts of your second year program: your thesis and your electives.
At the end of their first year, students will need to delineate the thesis they propose to undertake and to provide an approximate sense of the proportion of the thesis they will devote in relationship to their artist’s statement / poetics. Minimally, all students must devote at least ten per cent of their thesis to an artist’s statement / poetics piece and at least ten percent to a creative work. For more information on thesis, see thesis work. You will be asked to describe your thesis project on a Second Year Transition Form, which includes thesis advisor requests, due the third week in May.
In addition to fifteen thesis credits, you will need to take 15 elective credits for your MFA degree. There are many courses at UWB and UWS that are open to you as MFA students and that will count toward the 15 elective credits you need to complete your degree. Please keep in mind if you wish to develop an expertise in an area for which you have little or no training, such as Environmental Studies or Public Policy, we will work with you to develop a track of courses that will provide basic introductions to these fields as well as more advanced work.
