NATIONAL
The web site for the U.S. Department of Education includes information on initiatives & priorities of the Education Department, research & statistics and publications published by the Department of Education. The site also includes information for parents, teachers and students.
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the main federal law affecting K - 12 education. The NCLB Act incorporates four principles: accountability for results; more choices for parents; greater local control; and an emphasis on scientific research to determine best practices. There has been much discussion and disagreement about this legislation. For more information, see the Campus Library's NCLB web site.
National Library of Education:
The National Library of Education is the world’s largest federally funded library devoted solely to education. The Library is the federal government’s main resource center for educational information.

Statistical Resources on the Web:
An excellent place to search for statistics by subject, this guide to Internet statistical resources is provided by the University of Michigan Libraries. Sources are arranged by topic, but can also be searched by keyword.
National Center for Education Statistics:
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data that are related to education in the U.S. and other nations. NCES is part of the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education.
National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress is often called the 'Nation's Report Card.' NAEP is the only nationally representative, continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP provides comprehensive measure of students' learning at critical junctures in their school experience.
This web site is sponsored by the Forum on Child and Family Statistics. This web site provides access to federal and state statistics and reports on children and their families, including population and family characteristics, economic security, health, behavior and social environment, and education. The site also includes America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being, the annual report on the status of the nation's children.
The main source of demographic information on the United States. The Census Bureau collects much of the data analyzed and packaged by other sources. There are many ways of accessing data from the Census. Good places to start include the Gateway to the 2000 Census and the American Factfinder.
This site provides a supplement to the Statistical Abstract of the United States which provides national summary data including information on education.
U.S. Department of Education: Research & Statistics
Shares the latest research findings, statistics, and information on education with parents, teachers, school board members, policy makers, and the general public in order to help state and local decision makers improve their schools.
INTERNATIONAL
UNESCO Institute for Statistics provides global and internationally comparable statistics on education, science, technology, culture and communication.
UNESCO - Educational For All 2000 Assessment was the most in-depth evaluation of basic education ever undertaken. Conducted in more than 180 countries, the Assessment took stock of the current status of basic education in each country and evaluated the progress achieved during the 1990s since the World Conference on Education for All.
International Archive of Education Data acquires, processes, documents, and disseminates data collected by national, state or provincial, local, and private organizations, pertaining to all levels of education in countries for which data can be made available.
The NCES International Program/Survey: International provides insights into the educational practices and outcomes of the United States by comparing them with those of other countries. This is achieved through the International Education Statistics program at NCES, which provides statistical information comparing the educational experiences and trends in other countries to those of the United States. Studies include the Civic Education Study, Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).
Statistics Canada provides information on Canadian social and economic statistics and products. It includes a link to statistics for the Canadian education system and Learning Resources.
WASHINGTON STATE
The Washington State Data Book contains information on Population, Economy, State Government Finance, Human Services, Criminal Justice, Education, Natural Resources, Environment, Energy, Transportation, and Local Government.
Washington State OFM Forecasting:
The Washington Office of Financial Management portal to statistics on population, health, human services, K-12 & higher education, economics & fiscal information, GIS, and other topics. There are many links off this page to excellent data sources on Washington State.
WASHINGTON STATE
The OSPI web site includes information on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) and the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR).
