days. Special note: Many of the children's books in the Suzzallo/Allen Library
do not circulate. Please ask for assistance from any library staff member.
Finding Children's Literature: The UW Libraries does not include a separate location code for children's literature in the Bothell Campus Library. When searching for children's literature in the UW Libraries Catalog use one of the following phrases after limiting your search to the Bothell/CCC Campus Library. juvenile fiction (will find children's fiction) juvenile literature (will find children's nonfiction) For example, if you wanted to find a nonfiction children's book on jazz, your search phrase would be juvenile literature and jazz. If you were looking for a fiction book about immigration, your search would be juvenile fiction and immigration. In both examples, the Location box will read Bothell/CCC Children's Lit. The Children's Literature collection in the Bothell Campus Library is located on the south end of the library's third floor. Many of the children's books in the Suzzallo/Allen Library do not circulate. It's a good idea when using the UW Libraries Catalog to limit the location to Bothell/CCC Library. Please contact a library staff member if you need assistance. Finding Books about Children's Literature: Use the phrase children's literature when searching for books about children's literature. You might want to narrow your search with other keywords (e.g., study and teaching; history and criticism; or reading promotion).

Databases Remember: If you are accessing the databases or electronic journals from home, you first must gain off-campus access by clicking on the red box on the top of this page and entering your UW NetID and password. ERIC UW restricted - The ERIC database is the world’s largest source of education information. It contains more than 1 million abstracts of journal articles and documents on education research and practice. Relevant subject headings include children's literature; adolescent literature; fairy tales; nursery rhymes; picture books; and reading materials. Please note: ERIC Documents from 1996 to the present are available full-text online. Each version of the database has its own way of providing the full-text of ERIC Documents. Please check with the reference staff if you have any questions concerning ERIC Documents. Remember: Only ERIC Documents are available full-text. If the ERIC Document you need is not available full-text online, use Document Delivery to order the article from the Microforms & Newspapers Library on the Seattle campus. On the form, be sure to use indicate the ED number. The ERIC database does not provide full-text to the articles. Use the link to UW Holdings to determine if the journal is available online. Be sure to check dates of the articles. The ERIC database goes back to 1963, and most of the older materials will not be available full-text! The public version of the ERIC database is available at the Educator's Reference Desk. Education Fulltext UW restricted - Education Full Text provides indexing of periodicals and yearbook articles dating from 1983; abstracting of those dating from Jan. 1994; and full text of those dating from January 1996. In other words, not everything in this database is available in full-text. Relevant subject headings include children's literature; books and reading; poetry; story telling; and young adults' literature. Literature Resource Center - UW restricted - LRC is a full-text resource for literary biographies and critical essays. It includes coverage of children's and young adult authors. MLA International Bibliography - UW restricted covers journal articles and documents in education. It is a good source for scholarship on the uses of literature in the classroom, children's librarianship and multicultural literature. Electronic Journals The Lion & the Unicorn - UW restricted - This journal provides a forum for serious, ongoing discussion of literature for children. Includes interviews with authors, editors and other important contributors to the field. Journal of Children's Literature - UW restricted - is a refereed journal published two times a year which contains articles by noted authors, profiles of authors and illustrators, research updates, and reviews of children's and professional books to broaden knowledge about children's literature. |

Horn Book - UW restricted - is published bimonthly and contains articles and columns about childrens books as well as reviews of newly published children's books. School Library Journal - UW restricted - is a professional resource for librarians serving children and young adults in schools and public libraries. The monthly issues include articles and reviews of books and media. Voice of Youth Advocate: VOYA - UW restricted - this resource provides articles, bibliographies and reviews of materials for and about adolescents. Cooperative Children's Books Center (CCBC) - is a unique and vital gathering place for books, ideas, and expertise in the field of children's and young adult literature. The Center for Children's Books - is a crossroads for critical inquiry, professional training, and educational outreach related to literature for youth from birth through adolescence.
