Cascadia New Student Checklist: Library and Technology Guide

Did you know that you have access to hundreds of online databases, fulltext journals, laptops that you can checkout and take home, scanners, 50+ computers, group study rooms, quiet study areas, and helpful research librarians?

Here is some information to get you started, please contact us if you have any questions!

1. GET A UW NetID

You will need a UW NetID to view your library record online, request materials from the library catalog, initiate renewals, search our research databases from off campus, use the wireless network in the Library, and more. To learn about UW NetIDs, visit the following links:

2.  CONNECT FROM HOME

You'll use your UW NetID to access our research databases from off-campus. These are usually labelled "UW restricted", and include electronic journals, research databases, encyclopedias, and more. Only access to those resources with the "UW restricted" icon are affected. This service is not required for off-campus access to the UW Libraries Catalog, renewing or requesting books, or ERes electronic reserves.

3.  ACTIVATE YOUR LIBRARY ACCOUNT

Before you check out books (or use many other Library services) make sure that your library account is activated. Just visit the Information Commons Desk in the Campus Library, present your CCC ID card, and ask any staff person to verify that your account is ready for use. Staff will input any information necessary for immediate and complete library service.

Setting up email notification online (optional)

Entering a current email address into your library record sets up electronic delivery of library notices. Setting up email notification allows you to get emails when a requested item is available for pickup, when a book you've checked out is overdue or when an item on your account has been recalled for another patron. You will not receive printed overdue notices in the mail - only via e-mail.

As an alternative to contacting library staff in the Information Commons of the Campus Library, you may register for email notification online, by logging into Your Library Account using your UW NetID.

    • Choose the "Modify Personal Information" link
    • Enter your email address (or change the email address already in your record) and click on SUBMIT
    • To protect your privacy, close all browser windows when finished accessing your library account information

4.  READ ABOUT THE LIBRARY'S ELECTRONIC RESERVES SYSTEM

Many instructors place copies of articles, book chapters, or other materials on electronic reserve (ERes). You'll need to have your UW NetID to access these readings.
