Videoconferencing is a great way to connect students, faculty, staff, and even family and friends. There is a variety of free and easy-to-use videoconferencing software available for faculty, staff, and students available at University of Washington Bothell. In the following paragraphs, you will find a list of reliable and free videoconferencing options as well as a comparison between the tools. 

Google Hangouts

Instant messaging and video/voice chat tool via the web browser or as a mobile app. Allows you to chat with anyone who has a Google account, it includes integration of Google Tools, recording via Google+, and desktop sharing. This application works on all platforms including computers, smartphones and tablets. It requires account activation.

Skype

Skype is a software application for Mac and Windows that allows users to make voice calls and video conference with other users. Users can make voice calls to other Skype accounts on another computer and to landline/mobile phones (per minute fee required). Skype users with access to a webcam can also video conference with other Skype users for free.

Canvas Conference

Conferences allow you to communicate remotely via webcam and virtual whiteboard to students and other course members in Canvas. Instructors can this feature in Canvas to: 

  • Conduct a virtual lecture via webcam to the class.
  • Demonstrate the use of a tool or software by broadcasting the screen.
  • Meet one-on-one with students in virtual office hours.
  • Connect with students, colleagues, or other groups to collaborate with each other.

Google Hangouts on Air offers a feature to schedule, invite, record, or broadcast a future Hangout when set up from your Google+ account. Recordings are saved in You Tube.
