Utilizing Rubrics

What is a rubric?

Rubrics provides a way for instructors to clearly state their expectations of student work. They list the criteria expected from students' work and explains the levels of success a student can achieve. It also provides instructors quick and unbiased grading on students' work. Students can also benefit from rubrics as they have the potential to change students' view on their classwork by creating the ability for students to judge their work and set goals for themselves. 

How to create rubrics:

In order for students to easily comprehend an assignment, rubrics should be as simple and as specific as possible. Negativity and instructor biases should not be involved in a rubric, and instead should specify the problems that occur in students' work. There are many tools online that instructors can use as a starting point for their rubrics (examples listed below). Use these tools, and build your assignment criteria off of them.

Before creating a rubric, as an instructor, ask yourself: what are the goals of this assignment and how can students achieve this? Once you find an answer to this, filling in the blanks of a rubric is easy. Consider what criteria makes students' work 'quality work,' then think of how you can break that criteria into different levels of student success.
