Canvas for Students

Personal Inbox


Also known as the Conversations Inbox, the Inbox will store all messages and conversations you have with instructors and other students on Canvas.

To access your inbox, at the top-right portion of the page, click on Inbox found next to the Settings link.


Inbox Interface


The inbox interface has two sections:


  • The left section shows all of your messages in your inbox.
  • You can filter through different types of messages by clicking on the Inbox drop-down menu, which will view the messages as Unread, Starred, Sent, etc.
  • You can also filter your inbox by typing in a name, course, or group into the Filter box.
  • Lastly, you can create a new message by clicking on the pencil icon next to Filter.
  • The right section shows a New Message interface that you can use to create new conversations with others on Canvas.


  • When selecting a conversation in the left section, the right section will show the conversation in full detail.

Managing Your Messages


Managing your messages can be done through the gear icon. The gear icon will appear when you hover your mouse over a message and you can mark your messages in the following ways:

  • Mark as Read
  • Star
  • Archive (moves, but does not delete, messages)
  • Delete


Reminder: You can view your messages based on their different markings by clicking on the Inbox drop-down menu. Doing so will only show messages that are starred, archived, etc.

Creating a Message

To create a message, click on the inbox-pencil-icon-(1).JPG icon.


  • Enter the recipient's name, the course name, or the group you wish to contact.
  • Type in your message, attach any files you wish to distribute, or record/upload media from your computer.
