Creating a Course Wiki

Although there is technically no "wiki" feature in Canvas, the Pages feature serves the same function. This tutorial will serve as a step-by-step guide on how to do this and show you how to:

Setting Page Permissions and Adding Content

  • Once logged into Canvas, go to your course. Click the Pages tab on the left side of the page.

  • You will be redirected to the Pages page. Here you can view existing pages in your course, or create new pages. To create a new page, click the button at the bottom right side of the page reading Create a New Page.
  • Upon clicking the button, you will be prompted to name your page. Choose a name and click the Create button to the right. You will then be directed to your new page.

  •  Before you add content, change the editing permissions from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page to your preference for who can edit:
    • Only Teachers
    • Teachers and Students
    • Anyone (students, teachers, and anyone else with a role in the course)
  • Notice that even if Only Teachers is selected, students can still see the page. If you would like the page to be hidden from students, check the box next to Hide this Page From Students.

  • Now that editing permissions are set, you may now begin inserting content into your wiki page. Once you are satisfied with your page, click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen.

Linking Wiki Pages

A defining characteristic of a wiki is that they contain many pages which are linked to one another. To do this:

  • Make sure the page is in edit mode. If it is not, click the Edit this Page button in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • Choose a word or phrase that you would like to link to an existing wiki page and highlight it by left-clicking and dragging your cursor across it.

  • While the text is still highlighted, go to the right side of the screen under Page Tools. In the section Insert Content into the Page, you will see a list of all of your existing wiki pages in the pages section of your course. Click on any page to link it to the highlighted text.

  • Your text will now be linked with its wiki page.
