Work Related Software

UWB IT is responsible for installing and maintaining software for UWB campus employees. If you would like software installed on your computer, please visit http://www.uwb.edu/it/forms/softwarerequestform to request software. We ask that you please allow up to two weeks to have your software installed onto your computer. We do have many pieces of software that can be installed sooner, but if it is a piece of software that we have not previously dealt with, we need some time to review the usage rights of the software.

Free and Discounted Software

A great perk of working for the University of Washington is that they offer free and reduced software for it's employees through their UWare program! Some software such as Microsoft Office 2013 and 2016 are entirely free to employees while other pieces of software, such as many Adobe products, are offered at a reduced price. There are limitations to this software, such as only being able to be used on your home computers that you own.

UWare is supported and maintain by UW Seattle's IT and they are happy to help answer any questions. Their phone number is 2016-221-5000 and can also be contacted at help@uw.edu.

If you would like information about software that is available to students, staff, and faculty at a free or reduced cost, please visit the University of Washington's UWare page on ITConnect for more details.

UWB Account vs. UW NetID Account

Understandably, there can be some confusion when it comes to differentiating between a UWB accound and a NetID Account. The following paragraphs are a great place to start when you are looking for more information about the differences between the two!

UW Bothell Account

A UWB account is provisioned by UWB IT for staff and faculty. It is used primarily to log into computers and associated resources, such as file server access, printing, and Kentico access. Typically, UWB accounts are the first letter of your first name and then your last name. As an example, if your name was Jane Doe, you UWB account name would be jdoe@uwb.edu. If you have forgotten the password to your UWB account, please visit the Helpdesk in LB2-218 between the hours of 8:00AM and 5:00PM with valid photo ID to have your password reset.

UW NetID Account

A UW NetID account is provisioned by UW Seattle IT to all associated with UW. This includes but is not limited to students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Your official University of Washington email is based of your UW NetID. A NetID is used to access various UW resources, such as MyUW, Canvas, Employee Self Service, as well as many other resources. If you have forgotten your UW NetID password, please visit this link or call UW Seattle's Information Technologies department at 206-221-5000.Text after the two columns

If you have any questions about either one of these accounts, please feel free to give the Helpdesk a call at 425-352-3456 or email us at uwbit@uw.edu.

Classroom and Event Support

Whether you are teaching a class or having an event, we are here to help! We provide technology support to various parts of the campus. Some of the services that we offer are:

  • Coordinating technology for your next meeting or event
  • Immediate troubleshooting assistance should you need it at your event, meeting or class. (Dial 2-3456 from any campus phone)
  • Provide training for all ePodiums located in classrooms
  • Coordinate a Mobile Computer Lab (cart with 20-25 Windows laptops)

If you would like to request these and other services, please fill out either the Classroom/Meeting Request form or the Event Request Form depending on where your event is located.

Production Services

If you are looking for poster printing, photography or videography shoots, or maybe even help with editing photos/videos, we've got you covered! Marc Studer is our campus Media Producer who is available to help you out with your media project! If you would like to request his services, email uwbit@uw.edu with as much notice as possible.

Learning Technologies

University of Washington Bothell's Learning Technologies department provides support for the integration of technology in teaching and learning for faculty and staff. We work to enhance student learning through the most efficient and effective use of instructional technology. We also provide technology consultations, one-on-one training, workshops, and other services that are beneficial to an innovative learning environment. In addition, we manage and support the The Open Learning Lab. If you are interested in how to best incorporate technology into new or updated assignments and projects or if you're learning how to use new software or technology tools, please contact Learning Technologies for assistance and more information.

Some examples of the services Learning Technologies supports:

  • Canvas
  • Panopto Recordings
  • Turning Point Clicker Technology
  • Google Applications

Additionally, they have a breadth of information on their website, http://www.uwb.edu/learningtech. This page contains tutorials for both faculty and their students.

Safe Web Browsing

In order to keep your information as well as the University's information as secure as possible, we recommend that you follow these tips to keep your information safe:

  • Do not share your password with anyone
  • Do not write your password down
  • Do not log on to your computer and allow someone else to use it
  • Remember to log off when you leave for the day
  • Feel free to call UWB IT (2-3456) if you have any questions

We really would like to stress the importance of keeping your password a secret! If someone acquires your passwords, they can do any of the dollowing and more:

  • Read your email
  • Send email that will look like it is from you
  • Modify or delete your files
  • Access your personal information
  • Run programs that would disrupt UW networking and computing services

UWB IT will never ask you for your password. If you have given your password out, please call 425-352-3456 or email uwbit@uw.edu for the next steps to take. It all starts by having a strong password! You are much less likely to get hacked with a strong password.

Web and Email Policies

Being an employee of the University of Washington means that you are bound by some rules set forth by the University as far as the use of technology. The following are some of the highlights.

Limited Personal Use: The state ethics board has states that you may use your work station for limited personal use. If you want you check your personal email or look at bus times, you may do so as long as it doesn't interfere or compromise the UW systems.

No Right To Privacy (Washington Public Disclosure Act): Since you now work for the State of Washington, all UW employees are subject to the Washington Public Disclosure Act. This means that any work we do on our work computers can be searched or reviewed as requested, including email. While this doesn't mean that someone is constantly monitoring your computer, being a state employee means that our computers are public knowledge and, if requested, others can see what we have been up to on our computers. If you don't want it printed on the front page of the Seattle Times, think twice about writing it down and making it public record.
