Changing your Personal and Shared NetID

Before you change your personal NetID,
please contact the UWB IT Helpdesk
2-3456 or

Please note that changing your personal NetID is a disruptive process. It is not 100% automated and does require that you, the user, take some action after the change.

If you would like to change a shared NetID please click here.

If you would still like to change your NetID, please read the following steps to help successfully guide you through the process:

  • To prevent any issues with your email migration, please do not change your NetID until after you have migrated to the new Office 365 Exchange Online.
  • Before you change your NetID, please contact UWB IT. We must update your UWB forwarding settings to avoid email data lose.

UW Seattle IT is responsible for processing all UW NetID changes. UW Bothell IT does not have the access needed to make such changes. If you would like to have your NetID changed, please follow the steps below to contact UW Seattle IT.

In order to change your UW NetID, UW Seattle IT must verify your identity over the phone. They will need some key pieces of your information to confirm your identity. For security purposes, you must call and request your own NetID username change.

The information they will need to collect from you is:

  • Full name
  • Birthdate
  • Employee ID number
  • Last 6 digits of your social security number
  • It's a good idea to have a few ideas of what you would like to have your NetID username changed to (in case your first choice is unavailable). Please keep in mind that your NetID needs to be between 3 and 8 characters long.

After you've gathered the information above:

  • Call UW Seattle IT at (206)-221-5000
  • Press 0 (zero) from the menu options
  • Let the technician know that you are a UW employee from the Bothell campus and would like to change your NetID

Following the change to your UW Net ID, your account settings were changed so that your account functions properly. Other changes, however, may still be needed and will require action on your part, such as:

  • Your desktop email program (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird etc.) will need to be updated with a new profile.
  • Web pages that may have published links that refer to your old UW NetID.
  • Your Mailman list subscription and/or ownership address will need to be updated - please contact UW Technology at for assistance.
  • Your Catalyst tools may need to be updated - please contact Catalyst via for assistance.
  • Your access to Administrative Applications on Keynes (e.g. BGT, FIN, PAS, HEPPS, SDB, etc.) may need to be updated - please contact for assistance.
  • Your colleagues and friends may need to be reminded of your new email address since your old address will no longer work.
  • You will need to notify your payroll coordinator of this change
  • Changing your NetID may result in some email loss. This is because it takes some time to adjust the UWB email forwarding settings. During this time it is possible that an email is sent to you but you do not receive it becuase your UWB email is still being forwarded to your previous NetID. No email already in your inbox will be deleted, but you may have issues receiving forwarded UWB emails. Please contact UWB IT (2-3456) to notify them of the NetID change ASAP to avoid as much email loss as possible.
  • Once you change your NetID, your previous NetID will no longer be active. Any mail sent to your previous UW NetID email will not be delivered to you (all senders should receive a bounce back email).
  • After you change your NetID, you may not go back to your previous NetID at any point.
