SHANKAR HONORED WITH 2008 DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD: Dr. Gowri Shankar, an Associate Professor in the Business Program, was named UW Bothell's 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient. Shankar has taught courses in finance, accounting and economics at UW Bothell since 2001. In doing so, he has built a reputation among both his students and his faculty colleagues as a dedicated teacher with a strong commitment to the long term intellectual and professional development of all his students.
VICE CHANCELLOR NEWS: Marilyn Cox joins UW Bothell as Vice Chancellor for Administration and Planning. "She brings a great deal of expertise in areas of fiscal management and planning which are essential as we continue to build our campus and expand our resources to meet the needs of the residents of the greater Puget Sound region," said Chancellor Kenyon Chan. ... Cox replaces Craig Purkey, Interim Vice Chancellor, who will retire after serving UW Seattle from 1976-1998 and UW Bothell from 2006-2008. ... Also, Susan Jeffords' appointment to the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs was recently made permanent. Jeffords joined UW Bothell in September of 2007 as Interim Vice Chancellor.
OFF-RAMP A GO: Mowat Construction Co. was selected in January to build the SR 522 UW Bothell/Cascadia Community College South Campus Access project. This highly anticipated project will allow the campus to expand to 10,000 full-time students. Preliminary construction on the $50.7 million project is slated to begin this spring.
PRESIDENT'S HONOR ROLL: UW Bothell has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service 2007 Honor Roll for its leadership in a variety of community-based service learning projects including: Space Huskies, Restoration Ecology Network, Northshore Family Center, Tent City 4 and the Juanita Elementary Literacy Project.
SAFE FOR SALMON: UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College received the Salmon-Safe designation for safeguards deployed to protect water quality and salmon habitat, as well as commitments the campus has made to further reduce its environmental impact.

Colleague, friend and "Founding Faculty" member Jane E. Decker passed away on February 21, 2008. Professor Decker served in many roles at UW Bothell, including founding program director for Liberal Studies 1990-1997, interim program director for Nursing 1995-1996, associate dean for academic planning 1996-2004 and interim vice chancellor for academic affairs 2002-2004. Natalie Kay Lang (Liberal Studies '97), Admissions and International Student Advisor, died on December 23, 2007 of unexpected liver problems while on dialysis from kidney failure. Among the many contributions over her 12 years at UW Bothell, was Natalie's involvement in welcoming and supporting international students through a Thanksgiving dinner and a festive Intercultural Night on campus. When Karen Morse was a straight-A student at Auburn High School in the 1960s, she once earned a rare grade of "B" for turning in a paper that was 100 pages long-because it was far more than the assignment required. Later, as a single mother raising two sons and attending community college, Morse somehow found time to write poetry and family history, make crafts, and pursue hobbies in art and photography.
