National Science Foundation - Where Discoveries BeginMay 13, 2014 - IAS faculty member Gwen Ottinger has won a prestigious early career development (CAREER) grant from the National Science Foundation for her project, “Environmental Justice and the Ethics of Science and Technology.” Over the 5-year grant, Ottinger will investigate how technologies for, and collaborations around, community air toxics monitoring affect the moral claims that environmental justice activists make on regulators and polluting industries; work with activist groups to develop new tools to interpret air monitoring data; and develop an immersive, community-based ethics course designed to train aspiring STEM professionals to think through the environmental justice consequences of their technological design decisions.
