Dan Berger publishes op-ed on detainee hunger strike in the Seattle Times

March 24, 2014 - IAS faculty member Dan Berger and UW School of Law assistant professor Angélica Cházaro publish an op-ed in the Seattle Times about a hunger strike by detainees at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. The hunger strike began on March 7 in protest of deportations and the conditions of their confinement; it follows a wave of prisoner hunger strikes in recent years. In these strikes, Berger and Cházaro see a rising social movement: "Along with people being held in local jails and state and federal prisons, the detainees have launched what may be the most urgent human-rights movement in our country today.
